Moly coated versus uncoated?
« on: March 18, 2011, 07:47:52 PM »
So I am trying to work some loads up for my 220 swift. Its a Ruger #1 with the factory barrel.Started out with 35.6 grains of Varget pushing a 50 grain vmax moly coated...results=3" 5 shot groups at 100 yrd.Next load was with 36.6 grains, same bullet but cut group down to 1.5" so am gonna try to bump the load up to 37 grains and keep working from there but the whole idea is that i didnt wanna be pushing the 4000 fps envelope.I am just wondering if the moly coated bullets may be a factor. The first time I have tried them in my swift. Now the loads I worked up for my old ladies 22 Hornet are with 40 grain moly coated vmax and that little sucker bunches the same hole all day long, but those are only going through the chrono at 2650 fps.Let me know what ya think or any good loads you guys might have, thanks

How is the scope/bases? I know there are a lot of #1's that don't shoot real well but in a 22 they should be hanging within reach of one moa. The Molly does make them take a bit more to slug up, but in my own 22-250 I saw very little difference. I would try to take it up to 3900-4000 for a group or two and see what it does. I am assuming you are trying to save barrel life by limping it along. The 500 fps difference is not gonna save you too much. I have 2000-2500 down the tube of my used 22-250 and they are all at 4 grand and still going well.

So.... check your scope and mounting.
Try a few up in velo to see how it plays.
Try slowing your powder way up to increase volume or try some filler.

The rings and scope are all good.I am gonna try using some 3031 and see how that works cause even stepping up to 38.8 grains of varget didnt do the trick.Through the chrono it was ringing in at 4034 fps and only getting 1.03" groups at best.If the 3031 doesnt work out I guess I will try the rest of the 50 grain vmaxs in the 22 hornet and try 52 grain Speers in the Swift.I know the Swift can be a real bugger to find a good load for so I will keep on tryin.

That is not necessarily bad accuracy from a number one.

Thanks Slayer...I know Hich country, alot of people say that about the #1 but I just have to believe that I can improve that a little bit,I really would like to see this rifle shooting 5 shot 1/2" groups.

I would look at some other #1 solutions, I am tarded on them, but i seem to recall something about the front screw touching the barrel and causing heartburn....good luck.

yes it is true, the front screw does touch the underside of the barrel but mine is floated and glassed...not an easy thing to do on a number 1 and that is what is frustrating.I really wanted a load with the 50 grain vmax but dont think it is gonna happen,so I have started working with the 52 grain speer BTHP and that might be the trick.Got a 3/4" group with the first load I tried yesterday,so things are looking up!On another note,I am dropping my Model 700 off on Thursday with my gunsmith buddy to get my 6.5x284 project started.

perhaps your gun just did not like the bullets you started with.....that happens. I hope you get it right, a #1 that shoots well is a gem to the eye and heart.
