LEUPOLD SCOPES(REALLY WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?)

Leupold is all I've ever used, I have 2 veri-x II 3x9 40's on rifles and I haven't had any problems at all I think they are a great value for the money and I've been pleased. I'm no expert but I allway's hit what I'm aiming at! I shoot my open site muzzleloader more in one year than I do my rifle's anyway.

Bobcat has really done a great job of differentiating things.  I would just add that you may want to consider some other scopes in the price range you considering.  Depending on the actual magnification, etc you're interested in there are IMO better values than Leu out there in the price point you mentioned.  I own 2 Leu vari X IIIs and really like them.  However, I do honestly think there are better scopes for the money than Leu.  Zeiss Conquest and the Elite 4200 are 2 that may be worth a look.

well i appriciate you all for the responces.......i only have one rifle which is a .270 but i hunt everything with it....mostly deer but everything! my old weaver scope (about 30yrs old)that has been mounted on my rifle finally *censored* the can so i am looking for something that can do everything for me.......

i am thinking the vx-II either 3x9 or 4x14 sounds good but i am still not sure about wether i want to get the 40mm or the 50mm objective. my father has the 50 and i like it but i just dont know if i need that......i can always get a cheek riser if the hight thing becomes a problem.....but really i hunt in rolling hilly wheat fields, canyons, and bowls and really steep draws were it gets dark sooner so i need that added time and added light when the sun is hidden by the mountains and trees....more to think about though....great information......

like what and does anyone else agree? what are the comparable costs at 300 dollars?

I don't have any nikon scopes but I believe my pistol scope will be one of those Nikon scopes. I do have one of their binocular sets (monarch) and it is great stuff for the money. Might be worth looking at that brand. I have heard many people say good things about their rifle scopes. Regarding 50mm vs. 40.  For a scope on an all around big game rifle I'd suggest spending you $ on better coatings/glass, etc. rather than 50mm objective.  There was an earlier subject in the forum where this was discussed... ya may wanna try and find it.  You can also check the forums on riflescopes.com for some more insight regarding this subject and the scopes I recommended.

You should only need a 50mm if you can't see very well on a hunting rifle. All the bigger objective does is allow a little more light through. The 40mm with a good leupold glass is plenty for hunting big game anywhere any time. I also think you should use your money on the glass rather than the objective size. You may want to consider the 30mm tube. I think it makes a sizable difference when it comes to getting actual light to your eye. My .02.

There are other good scopes besides Leupold, such as Bushnell, Burris, Nikon, Sightron, just to name a few. But I would rather spend my money on Leupold just for the fact that they're made in the U.S. Not only that but they are made in Oregon, and nobody can beat their warranty. It's sure nice to know you only have to ship your scope to Oregon for service, and they have a real quick turnaround time. With my one and only experience it was less than a week.

For someone really on a budget a good deal is the Burris Fullfield II in 3-9x40 with the ballistic plex reticle. If you look around, especially on ebay, you can find them new for $150, or just slightly more. But they are not made in the U.S. if that's important to you. Some Burris scopes are, but this one is not.

OK so the wife gave me the go and i did it. I got the scope.

I got a  leupold VX-II 4x12-50MM with the LR reticle. freaking nice as hell and i got a greeat deal. Cant wait to get it. it is in the mail on its happy journey awaiting its ounting on my .270 winchester.

I love sightron and I own 2 scopes by them that are amazing, one is a 4.5x14x50mm that I have on my CZ American527 in a .223 calibur and its awesome!!!!! anyways, just a thought

Sightron makes a very good scope for the money.  There are a bunch of high quality optics out there today and for some good prices.  We've never had it so good in respect to the number of good quality scopes for the $

I've had some more time to reflect on the Leupold scopes and experience..

While out shooting ground squirrels in Montana I found that I would be peeping into that scope for up to 8 hours in a day. I found there is a very big and noticable difference between the VX-I and VX-II lines with regards to eye relief. The VX-II is obviously the better choice. I could sit way back on the stock and relax my eye and concentrate on the shooting much more. With the VX-I I had to stay very close to the scope and it was a little bit harder to work the critters all day long.
