Bone Mount Elk Head
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:31:56 PM »
Well I shot a Spike elk last Oct. Black powder hunt. Decided to just make a skull mount. never done it before any tips?
Right now it is in a closed plastic garbage can in my wife's garden. I drilled some holes in the side so bugs could get in but no rain. Others told me the maggots would work on it.

Anyone got any ideas?

So far cannot smell it. But it has not been hot weather yet.

I would check it and see if the meat is dried out and/or what stage it is in.

Atleast your doing it the right way, dont boil them. I would put a couple gallons of water in there, you dont want it to dry out. I fill mine just above the upper teeth, main thing is to keep it moist and the more water the better.

I've done about 5 this way and they turned out great.

Nice ,thanks for the tip it was not dry but needed water. Bugs are working on it. Looks some bigger critter is trying to get into it though teeth marks around the lid. Suspect coons or possums.
Trapped four possums out of my garage last summer. Time to employ the trail cam.
