So I noticed that the watershed unit is open only during rifle season and it includes all three weapon types in that single season. So my question is if Im drawing the watershed unit for archery and get drawn, am I limited to using archery only or can I use a rifle?

This is for quality elk special permits.

Whatever tag you have determines what you can use.

You can apply with anytag but I believe if you get drawn you have to use the weapon  that your tag is valid for.

I think this is kind of unfair then because I could be competing with hunters who got drawn for rifle then.

Isn't this unit entry by permit only?
So unless if you have a special permit for that unit, you are not allowed in it at all?

You will have to use a bow if you have an archery tag.  That's the only reason I don't put in for that tag.  hunting that unit with a bow would be extremely difficult, not impossible, but VERY DIFFICULT.
I have helped guys in there the last two seasons.  Both killed 6 pt elk in the bottom...it's as tough a place as you can imagine with some of the worst weather and terrain I have ever hunted.  But the elk are there.

Why don't the game department have different seasons for the 3 weapon types then?
I'm pretty sure it's really hard for an archery hunter to get close to a bull in the season that they have for it.
I know how rugged the unit is cause I've hunted next door to it for awhile now.

that's my guess too.  They spend a bunch of time patrolling and it would be tough to do all fall.

You could always put in for a ghost draw until you have enough points and then when you get a multi season elk tag then apply for the watershed and you can hunt using whatever weapon.

You could do that, but only during the modern rifle season...which you can do anyway with a rifle tag.  The unit is only open (access is only allowed) during the Modern Rifle season.

I'm going to correct my own post.  I reread the regulations, and it now appears to me that there are not separate tags for archery, muzzleloader, and modern.  There are 45 tags for hunt 2005, period.  It looks as if they can go to anyone with an Eastern archery, muzzleloader, or modern license.   That's very unusual.    You'd best check with WDFW on this one, since it's an odd duck.  It may well be that anyone with one of these tags can use any weapon, if they're not weapon specific.

I believe you were right with your first post, Bob. If you want to hunt with a rifle, you need a modern firearm tag. There are other permits like this, where people with any tag can apply. The disabled hunter, over 65, and youth permits are almost all this way. And in every category there is this note at the top:

"You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag"

That unit is crazy steep, unless you are in great shape or have stock I wouldn't bother.  It's a beautiful area, we looked down into it when my friend had a wenaha tag and I'm glad I saw it so I new not to put in for it.

Im not so sure you can bring stock in the Watershed. Might look into that.

stock is allowed, but again, it would be VERY difficult.  The rocks and steep hillsides would be impossible for stock to travel safely.  It's a boot hunt...

wacoyotehunter is correct you would not want to take stock in that country. unless you wanted to die trying to getyour game out, stock is ok and needed unless you have help. with friends with strong backs and weak minds.
