External Hard Drive for Picture Storage
« on: May 08, 2011, 12:17:33 PM »
Ok, seeing bone's post about having to clear picture thumbnails, got me to thinking.

What External Hard drive brand is good?  is 500 GB a decent one to start with?

I have taken over 400 pictures in the last couple of weeks, and I have hundreds more already...
also do not want to lose them if my system crashes for some reason..

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I've got a 500 GB for video files, and I think it might end up being a bit small.  For pictures it should be fine though. Whatever size you can get a good deal on really.

I have had the fewest problems with Western Digital, get a 750gb or better if you are doing large numbers of high res pics. The rule of thumb in computer land is to have at least one backup, if the external drive is the backup you are good but if it's for primary storage than you should get a pair of them.

I have this one that is a pre-built.

The others that I have are all Samsung Spinpoint drives in Vantec enclosures. Price vs space and $$$ you should set the max at about $100 as the ratio goes sideways from there.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Had very good results with the Seagate 2 TB model sold at Costco for around 120.00.

First of all, I save all of my photos to DVDs and then I save them on my secondary internal hard drive and then to my External Western Digital 1 Terabyte hard drive. That way I have the photos saved in quite a few places and I don't have to worry about loosing them! :)
