300wsm loads
« on: May 09, 2011, 08:12:59 AM »
I just bought a tikka t3 in 300wsm and was hoping you guys could help me out with some load options.  I think I want to use the berger 185 hunting vlds but any info you could give would be greatly appreciated (powder, primers, oal etc..).  thanks for the help.

Your limitation will be the magazine.
Tikka's are usually long-throated and your chamber will accept a longer OAL than the mag.
You will need to test some empty casing/bullet combos and I would load at the max of your magazine.
In re Berger VLD's, I have not used them.
My favorite bullet for that cartridge (most cartridges!) is Barnes TSX...180 or 168.
They're long-for-weight, being all-copper and they are very accurate.
For powder, I use H-414 but have never gotten close to book velocities..usually around 4-5% under published velocity.

I use the Nosler Accubonds in my Tikka 300 WSM and it loves them.
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

Here is my load and results for Berger 185 VLD out of my Vanguard 300WSM Sub MOA:

Winchester Nickle Plated Brass
Federal GMM215 primer
IMR 4350 60.4 grains (max)
OAL = 2.88 (-0.02 from the lands) Bergers like to be seated close to the lands, so get an OAL gauge and find out.

Good luck!

the loads I worked up for my brother's 300 wsm .

165 gr. Nosler partition

near max load of Magpro

CCI Mag Rifle Primer

He is shooting a BAR, getting 9/16 in groups at 100 yds. with that load.

IMR 4831 and 4350 are both great powders for the 300WSM.
