Finally done cutting up my moose.  Took forever.  Total of about 12 hours over 2 different days.

On the the next moose hunt.  As some of you know - my 9 year old drew a Mt Spokane youth cow moose tag.  We are going out this afternoon and tomorrow.

Congrats Hunt on a great hunt, very, very great bull.  Much better bull than any I've seen in the area, very nicely done!
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Wow.  Nice job!

Washington Cow Moose Hunt 2011 (HUNT)

Finally getting around to putting up the story of my son Jaden's Mt Spokane cow moose hunt.

My wife and I were driving to the airport to catch a flight for an extended weekend vacation in Las Vegas.  On our way I checked to see if the drawing results were posted yet.  They were posted and much to her displeasure I pulled the car over so I could check them for myself and my 3 boys.  I checked my youngest sons, Jaden, results last figuring that he wouldnt draw anything since it was the first year he put in for the draw.  It showed that he drew a Mt Spokane youth moose tag.  I checked the results twice because I could hardly believe it.  A moose tag at only 9 years old!  We had already used up all of our luck before we even made it to the airport....

A member on here sent me a message telling me he knew the area pretty well and would show me around the area.  He said that he sees moose in there all the time and its not far from his house.  After a couple of scouting trips and only seeing one bull moose I thought this may be a much tougher hunt than I thought.  Jaden spent the summer practicing with a Remington Model 7 chambered in 7mm-08.  He put 200 rounds through it, shooting almost every week.  He practiced from shooting sticks, a bipod and a lead sled.  He was not real steady on the bipod or the shooting sticks, but from the lead sled he was dead on!

Our plan was to hunt the last part of October/first part of November.  After hunting my moose season in Idaho and the general Idaho elk season we were ready to focus on Jadens moose.  The first day we hunted was an afternoon.  We looked all over the area until dark and didnt see a single moose.  I decided that on Friday I would take the day off from work and we would hunt Friday through Sunday.  We got there shortly after daylight.  On the way in to where I wanted to hunt we saw a cow and a calf moose feeding above the road.  It had snowed about an inch overnight and they really stuck out.  I drove around the ridge and parked the pickup.  We got out and got ready and headed up to the top of the cut to get above the moose so we could see above the brush and hopefully have a clear shooting lane.  It took us about 15 minutes to get to where I thought we could see the moose but they were already gone.  We cut their tracks headed higher over the top of the ridge.  We followed their tracks for 1/2 mile or so before we decided to turn around and head back to the pickup.  We still werent at the spot I wanted to hunt that morning.

So we get to our spot but there is an elk hunter there already.  I talk to him and decide that we will come back later in the morning after he is gone.  So we head out to another area trying to cover some ground and glass the cuts for moose.  After not seeing any more moose we head back to our spot about noon.  We start walking up a kelly humped road nice and slow glassing the cuts as we go.  About 3/4 of a mile in we round a corner and up ahead we see a cow moose feeding up ahead on the uphill side of the old road we were on.  I tell Jaden to get down while I look through the bino's to make sure its a cow.  About this time she sees us and freezes quartering away while looking back at us.  Frozen like a statue.  I asked him where he was going to shoot her and he said right behind the shoulder.     I said ok and got the bipod ready and handed Jaden his rifle.  All of the training and shooting over the summer really paid off.  Jaden settled into the rifle, steaded his crosshairs and boom.  It didnt take 5 seconds from the time I handed him his rifle until he shot.  She didnt go 10 yards before she tipped over.  He shot her right through the heart.

The smile on his face says it all!
