NightForce 5.5-22x56 NKS... Anyone here have one?
« on: August 16, 2011, 08:03:20 AM »
Decided to make an investment and finish the long range rifle project with a new scope:

NightForce 5.5-22x56 NKS.

This one comes with the zero stop and velocity 1000 yard reticle matched to your load.

Does anyone here have a NightForce with a similar set up that could share their experience?

This scope better be worth the money.

I've got a couple.   Mine are NP-R1, which in my opinion, is the best long range hunting reticle available.   1 MOA in the verticle axis with a wider line every 2 MOA allows me to accurrately use the turret or the reticle to make long-range hits.

They are great scopes...

I have shot them and they are very nice scopes. I almost bought one for one of my big long range guns, but got the 8.5-25vx III.

I have several of them and use them alot on customers rifle builds.  Once you use one its hard to go back to any of the other scopes.  Go with the 50mm instead of the 56.  There is hardly any light difference and you can mount them lower to get a better cheekweld.

Go with the NP-R1 reticle and dial for your shots.  Any changes in elevation, temp, pressure, etc...will render the velocity reticle useless.  Those reticles work great if you shoot in one area all the time, but travel somewhere else where the conditions are different and they loose their function.

I have the 3.5-15x50 NXS, with the  NP-R1 reticule on my .338 edge. I love the thing, but I do think I would rather have the 5.5-22X50 :twocents:

She is sweet!
Every time I shoot it she amazes me! At 2K things start looking pretty small through a 15 power though :chuckle:

Good advice right there.   The 5.5-22x50 is my favorite.  I've had two 8-32x56's and they are a beast!

Interesting.. Thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately, the 56mm is the only one comming with the Velocity 1000 reticle, otherwise I would have gone with the 50mm... I am hoping it does not become too much of a beast. But the 300 RUM I have it being paired with is already a beast, so there is no real getting away with the whole set up being quite the load. You do make a good point about temp and conditions changing the outcome of the reticle. From what I have been told though you can enter the conditions (elevation, etc) into their ballistic software and it will spit out the POI change. From what I have seen so far, the difference between 4K and 10K in elevation changes POI with my load about 3.5-4" at 1K yards... which is still a kill.

Not to argue, but I don't see how that is possible.

Using a 210 Berger @ 3100fps there is an 18" difference in point of impact at 1000yds going from 4000' ASL to 10,000' ASL.  Going from 2000' ASL to 4000' ASL there is 10" difference in impact.  Really, if you are going to enter all your conditions into a program to get a conversion factor, there isn't any reason to not just dial for your shot.  Your basically doing the same thing.

That is what their software was comming back with. I am not the expert and have yet to verify with actual shooting.

Great Scopes.  You should buy two at the price they charge for those.   :yike:
