I'm not a safety nazi, but a news story of a guy who killed or injured his friend comes to mind.  I couldn't find the actual story, but a dude was walking with a knocked arrow following his buddy, his buddy stopped suddenly, the guy behind him with the knocked arrow did not stop.  Stabbed his friend in the back. 

In talking about knocked arrows I'm not so worried about me, but I don't like my hunting partners swinging around knocked arrows, so I don't do it either.


The other aspect is jump shooting deer, it's not something I do personally.  Someone walking around with a knocked bow is probably just hoping something pops up and he'll fling a quick shot at it.  Personally....I don't like to shoot at deer on high alert, they jump the string and it leads to bad shots.  I like it if they have no idea I'm there..in which case I have time to prepare...like knocking an arrow and getting ranges.

Yea there are all kinds out there.

Back in about 1982 I archery hunted Elk Season in Unit 6, Olympic Peninsula.  Shagged a herd for 2 days, never saw horns until the third morning when I found the herd just before daylight.  Dove off into the timber, 3 hours later I had a 5 point down.  Heavy timber, a fun hunt.  Packing out the head, luckily there was a logging spur about 200 yards down hill.   Sitting on the  tailgate having a coffee before heading to the quarters with a pack frame.


Tons of road hunters everywhere!   Funniest rig had two guys in the cab, they had mounted bow racks on the hood so they could jump out of the truck and grab a bow for that elusive big bull that would be standing in the road just around the next bend.     When they spotted the antlers in my pickup they slid to a stop and jumped out asking me where in the world did I find that bull???

I told them back in the heavy timber, you road hunters are out of luck trying to find one in the road.

Yep, beer cans in the bed of the pickup along with two coolers, guess what was in the coolers.


I actually spotted the herd 5 days before the season opened.    Doing my homework worked for me, I put in at least a week prior to the season scouting.   This herd was way down in a closed/gated area.   During the night before I got the bull they moved over a ridge into a big old growth unit and hid.   I think all the road hunting activity the first 2 days of the season kept them on the move.

Funny story about this one.....

I was actually headed into the woods to pull this camera. I was with my two daughters and Golden Retriever puppy. When we saw him I saw he had his ML and I immediately regretted bringing the puppy and apologized and told him had i known it was late ML I wouldnt have brought the pup. We talked for a few and shared some info. When I got to the cam I saw it was him!

Sooo how many arrows does a guy need for a day hunt? Not a very clear picture but he must have about 20 arrows. This is a small area that you can cover in a day.

Naw, not me.  Have not packed a bow since 1994.  Knee surgery ended my days of running the ridges and diving into ravines.  Now I fish, not to much  need for a pack frame in the boat, gave all the hunting gear to the son in law.

I carry 6 arrows with my bow, 2 for small game and 4 for big game.....if I run out, then that day is not my day and I'm going home. Now if I was backpacking I might take double that if it was a grouse filled area.
