went bear scouting today
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:58:27 PM »
So i have to say this was the worst and best day ever!  My buddy and i went into the chiwawa unit and as we arrived saw 2 whitetail bucks a 3 point and a 2 point.  We drove around looking for some draws and huckleberry's which we found so we set up and glassed for about an hour saw nothing so i figured i was bored so i tried calling which i am getting better at need work but everyone can get better.  Like 15 min after called some guy that must have been scouting or hunting i dont know comes in and is trying to figure out what was going on he just kept looking around and never spotted us.  We moved on to a different area found some scat and tracks but still no bear.  We moved out of there around lunch and headed up to hike this ridge on our way up there were 3 bucks a 6 point 3 point and a 2 point i have never seen 3 bucks together like this before without a doe around.  Found a good point and started calling again then i hear this beaping coming closer and closer and moving anyone have any idea what this is?  So overall it was a good deer scouting trip but not for bear anyone have any suggestions?

Whities in the Chiwawa?  Not good.  That's new.  I suppose it's not surprising that they'd eventually make it from the Entiat, but I haven't seen any yet in Chiwawa and I spend a lot of time there.

I'm no bear expert, but I'd guess they may still be focused on the green clover and grass in the open areas and not yet on the unripe huckleberries.  Saw one a few weeks back on the side of Hwy 20 just east of Stevens Pass, just grazing on the grass.  She couldn't care less about all the traffic whizzing by.

was it an electronic beep, or perhaps a bird beep...

without hearing it, it would be tough to say....perhaps a truck on some road you didnt know was there, it was backing up to check something out.

I have a beeper collar for my bird dog. Could it have been a dog? Not sure if hound hunters use the beeper collars.

Not trying to pee in your wheaties, but if you want to mess up future bear calling, go out and call now.  One of the worst things guys do is call before the season, no matter whether your talking elk or turkeys, but more so with bears.  These guys learn way faster then elk or turkeys and will become call shy in about a split second.  Just something to keep in mind.

Icicle outfitters has seen quite a few Whitetail in the Chiwawa, Entiat areas.

:yike:    You are going to call the Forest Service Office and ask about a beeping noise that chased you around in the woods?  Excuse me?

Why don't you inform them that your name is Darryl, you were also picked up by a flying saucer, got probed up your "vent" and was later deposited in front of a 7-11.  :dunno:  :IBCOOL:

Sorry....I just can't imagine what they are going to say to you about the noise...

Quite a few whitetails along Chumstick Highway (Plain), over to Kahler Glen.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
