Too bad about the Elk hunter David Sherwood
« on: November 16, 2011, 08:09:58 PM »
I know there was a post about finding a lost hunter near St Helens.  I saw he was found.  Too bad, not alive.  I just wanted to thank those that searched for him and to send my condolences to his family and friends. :sry:

The body of David Sherwood, 56, a hunter who had gone missing in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest last week, was found Tuesday morning.

A private helicopter located Sherwood's body at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the side of a steep ravine, according to the Skamania County Sheriff's Office.

"These past few days have been difficult for those involved in the search effort, including the family and friends of Mr. Sherwood," Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown said.

Sherwood's body was recovered after an hour-long operation by Sheriff's office personnel.

Sherwood's son had reported that his dad had not returned from an elk hunt Friday night. His father's vehicle was found Saturday afternoon on a spur road off Forest Service 2612 Road.
Search and rescue resources were immediately requested through the Washington State Department of Emergency Management. Search efforts in the area of the vehicle were coordinated throughout the night.

On Sunday morning, approximately 78 friends, family and official Search and Rescue teams searched the area northeast of Spirit Lake in Skamania County until 7 p.m.

I think he was a member on here... if anyone can find out for sure.. would be nice to maybe send the family all of our condolences...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

God bless this man. Very sorry to hear this.
I had read that there was dead bull in the vicinity. Was that his bull he was in the act of retrieving?

He drew the margaret bull tag. shot a bull and was taking the head out to his truck to get help with the rest of it. Somewhere in between he fell down a steep revine. He had flagged his way out but the weather did not cooperate for the search party to find him.  The land up there is unforgiving plus bad weather.  my prayers go out to his family and friends, RIP Dave

Very sorry to hear what happened. There is one bright side, at least he died doing what he loved.

I remember in the other topic regarding David Sherwood being lost, it seems there was a family member and a co-worker who are members here. I'm not sure whether David was a member or not. My condolences to his family and friends, it must be a hard time.

Very very sad. As we all get up there in years, we have to think about this type of thing happening when we go out by ourselves. We sometimes think we're in good huntin shape but ya never know when you're gonna take a fall and break a leg or something else. We do crazy unheard of things when we're pursuing that elusive bull, buck or big king salmon and forget about what we're really doing at the time. Be careful out there everyone. Take care and good luck.

The news reported that Trans Alta hired the chopper that found him.

Him and his family have been in our prayers also. Its sad that he passed away. But I am glad they found his body when they did.I was afraid if it didnt happen that day. That with the storms coming in.It wouldnt happen till snow melt next year. This way at least they can have some closure.

Praying for strength and healing for his family.

One of the many reasons I don't like hunting alone, but you never know when it is your time. As true as it probably is that he went doing what he loved, it is still heartbreaking for his family.  Great job for his family reporting him not home in time.

This is a perfect example of why you should have a plan and make you plan known to family and loved ones.

I was hunting in the area at the time and it was absolutely horrible to have to wake up and drive past the command center, the search and rescue vehicles and listen to the helicopters look for him. Had I known the severity of it before I got back home from Elk Camp I would have willingly lent a hand in the search. His truck was found on the 2612 road and our Camp was up off of the 56 road just a few miles away. Very sad, his family and friends are in my thoughts.

Very, very sad!!!!  :(
Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.

Just because bad things can happen, this is why I leave the gps coordinates to where we camp, might camp, and my honey holes with the Mrs.  I leave her paper copies of the gps maps which show the breadcrumb trails of everywhere I have ever been where I have camped/hunted.  Every year, post hunt, I update my "master map" for these areas adding in anything new and that is what she gets in a paper and electronic copy before I leave home.

Very sad outcome with Dave. Great guy and he would do anything to help you. he would always let my brother borrow his small excuvater and just ask the he filled with fuel. I hope the people in Lewis area realize how lucky they are to have Trans- Alta in the community. Also i was told that the Lyons Logging company out of Onalaska sent thier employees out on Monday to help search for Dave and paid thier wages for the day, Thanks Lyons Logging and all the other people who took the time to help with the search.
