We had never seen a Snowy Owl before. This one was only a few miles from home in the middle of a field.   :)

I saw one on top of Umtanum Ridge by the towers 2 weeks ago. Wish I had a camera to get the long shot. They are a beautiful bird.

Hey great images WT!  I really do need to invest in a good camera like yours.  Just for kicks here is a very not so good  :chuckle: cell pic I took yesterday while pheasant hunting. Probably the same owl, I got very close and snapped a pic as he flew, kindof a white blur but was cool to get that close. Was talking to a bio and said they only migrate up this way from the arctic every 8 years.

my great grandpa had one show up in sequim and it was hurt pretty bad, he is dead now and it was a long time ago, but he nursed it back to health and that snow owl lived out his days perched up on grandpas porch, grandpa could feed it but no one else could, to this day it is still the only one i ever seen, still dont know how it ended up there we always figured it got away from the game farm, which is one of my familys greatest stories, back in the day that farm was quite a sight, still is but anyone that knew that place back in the day knows what i mean
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

There are quite a few being spotted everywhere right now on the birding forums.  It seems we are going to have an "eruption" type year.  I've seen reports from Camano Is. Dungenes Spit, Ocean Shores, and fields in the Douglas County area.  They tend to come down this far during extreme winters and when the lemming population crashes up north they come down this way to feed.  During good lemming years, we hardly get but one or two sightings.  They tend to like it in the open along the coast and beach and in the fields around the Mansfield area toward Spokane.  I have yet to get any decent images of one...

I guess this is one of the worst lemming crashes they have experienced.   Course everything is bigger and worse, but I did hear that.

Same thing that happened to the Polar bear and grizz----global warming. ;)

Nice pic of the owl. Hope I get to see one.
