1979 bronco
« on: January 05, 2012, 12:36:56 PM »
I picked one up in September and since it ain't that cold and the huntin sucks might as well mess with it some more. Got deal on it. It has a built 400m and and a little lift with bald 35s. Full dual 2.5 exhaust with flowmasters and hedman headers. The guy thought the tranny was goingbout so he sold it to me for $400. Found out a vaccume hose wasn't was unplugged at the tranny. Made a world of differance. Any ways. A guy before the guy I bought it from put 4.11 gear in the rear. But sold it before he out the 4.11 gear in the front. And this idiot sold it instead of putting it in. Meaning it can't go into 4 wheel drive until I do that. My question is, can i take that 4.11 gear out of this Ford 9 axle and put it in one with limited slip? Or would the factory limited slip not work with that gear? I also am having trouble with the power steering. It doesbt want to work until I get it turned to a certain spot and then it'll work for a sec and then back to no power steering. Maybe a plugged line idk  :dunno: here's a pic of her. Planning on painting her myself this year. Cutting the Fenders because averse one is completely rusted and ill do fender flares with bigger tires.

You can install certan gearing until you jump too large/small, and L/S will still work, with the rite gears.  i went from 3.65(?) to 4.11's, and it didnt need replacing, but a 4.56, would require a bigger carrier.
If you are going to wheel it, go with a locker up front, (4.11's are good gears), and keep the L/S in the rear. Did this in my 67' Bronco and worked great(eaton E locker)! Love the D44 in that thing, its a high pinion! And the NP435 trani is bulletproof, i would switch.
Look for leaks at hoses, for P/S, bubbles in the pump, Pump might be bad, boxes are very strong on those!
This is strictly for wheeling! :twocents:
A killer site is Broncograveyard.com They have alot to offer to the 78-79 Broncos!
Good luck, very fun rig!

I think the stock gears in it are 3.55. The Ford 9 in it now doesn't have limited slip but my uncle has an axle with it that i can have. I just didn't know if i could swap that 4.11 head into okay.

Call Randy's Ring and Pinion, absolutely the best as far as what can and can not be done within the same carrier. They sell quality parts at fair prices.

No I do not work for them. But I do alot of business with them.

Thanks for the advice. It's a fun project and I have a lot of work ahead of me. The door dent in the pic I got out today and while I had one door panel off I went ahead and took the other off and put some new speakers in.
