I like the .22 mag, lost a nice bobcat a few years back with a perfect shot out of my HMR. Its a strange little gun, I've shot yotes at 100yds with it also and stoned them. But overall I have more consistant luck with my .22 mag.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

My mom got me a savage in 17 HMR for christmas one year. It is devastating on little critters and super accurate. The only gripe i have about it is that on squirrels you must wait for a head shot or it will blow them in half. I have shot squirrels over 100 yards away with it and shot a mouse in the head at 60 yards. It shoots amazingly well. With the variety of bullets and weights available today i would have no qualms with shooting a coyote with it under 100 yards.  But to each their own. 22 lr is fine for me if i want a heavier bullet but the 17 shoots so much flatter and on small game using it is almost like cheating.
