Has anyone hunted for grouse with a bow or at least shot one with it. I think it would be fun and challenging but I dont want to ruin the meat or lose too many arrows while doing it. What type of tips should I use what poundage etc. Thanks for input.

I've killed a couple while lek hunting with a judo tip to the head. I miss a lot like that too but the meat doesn't get totaled from a body shot when you connect..

I don't know that a lot of guys go out specifically hunting for grouse with archery equipment. Many archers have a grouse arrow in their quiver and I'm sure LOTS of guys on here have harvested them. It's amazing that you can put a broadhead through a grouse and they can fly for a bit. Judo's to the head are my preferred tactic.

ive shot a few,id go for head shots to save meat..pending where you hit them those small game heads can be prety devistating...ive watched a grouse pretty much get blown up on a 20 yard shot an still fly a good hundred yards befor it dies..another reson for the headshot

Yep, I always have one in my quiver and I always lose a few every year! I never thought about going out just for Grouse, but not a bad idea come think of it! I always wait till fall when every thing is open at the same time. I like to do my Judo kick to the head shot!

Put a 1/2 inch diameter washer behind your field point. Shoot them in the head or back, side or front = some meat damage. Far better than a broadhead, almost no lost arrows, and less damage than a judo on a body shot. I've found it doesn't appreciably affect my POI out to 20 yards (I don't try to shoot farther than that on grouse), and it makes a cool sound too.

The last one i shot got away with my arrow.

The last one I shot took off running (couldn't fly), I stepped on its tail as it was running away (and me running after it) from me and pulled out it's tail feathers. Never could find that thing after that!
It was 3 yards away. Where to you sight at 3 Yards? I lost 2 arrows on that dumb bird!

I was looking at getting some snaro bird points this year to try for grouse.

That washer trick sounds promising I have heard of that before. I was also looking into the snaro bird points they looked like they could do some damage to a bird.

Snaros work ok but they don't fit in any quiver and snag on everything. If you beat the brush don't dare pack them around, they work but a good judo point is the cats meow :tup:

I always have a blunt tipped arrow in my quiver :tup:

in a 5 arrow quiver 2 are judos for grouse. I have packed it with the intent of shooting grouse while scouting. :tup: its a challenge enjoy

I've shot many grouse with my bow while elk hunting. One year there were so many grouse my buddy and I averaged 6 per day between the two of us. Makes for some good eating at camp :tup: my trick was to bring a ziplock bag and breast them out immediately and put the meat in my pack next to my ice cold water bottles. Better than carrying around some dead birds all day.

While elk hunting, never shoot a grouse unless it's in last half of the day. One evening, I'm heading back to camp and I spot 3 grouse at about 10 yards. Been living on Mountain House for several days by then. Seems like too easy a shot to pass up. Nice grassy backdrop to catch my arrow. I line up a shot, putting 20 yard pin on head of bird, and punch the trigger. "Punch" is the wrong thing to do when bowhunting, by the way. The arrow zips past the bird, narrowly missing and the birds scatter a little but still within a few feet of starting position. I pull another arrow from the quiver to waste (was using thunderheads at the time). This time I line up and "squeeze" the trigger. Bird drops in its spot. Now remaining grouse scatter out of sight. I walk in to retrieve my arrows and my bird. I pick up the bird, then go for the first one, neatly sticking out of the grass. I look over, and about 3 feet from me is a grouse. My 28 inch arrow, plus the length of my arm quickly impales that one. I walk over to get my other arrow that went into the bush behind the second bird I shot at. I see another grouse flopping around with its neck under the second arrow I had shot. I grab that grouse and dispatch it. That night I ate well.

I unscrew my field points and screw in a small washer between my field point and arrow shaft. I used to go out and to hunt grouse with my bow back home in an archery only area just road hunting, you won't lose arrows and the arrow won't fly through the bird so it has a really hard time flying away after you shoot it. I shoot them through the upper body/breast. Who cares if there's a hole in the meat its not like it gets blood shot I dont remember losing meat. Wish I had pics I think the best I did was around 7 birds in a day
