:IBCOOL: for the second time in less than 5 years this meat hunter got drawn for a muzzy cow tag in manastash. did not convert last time... can only hope to this time.  the weather was crap...way hot...maybe it be real cold this time.  anybody else get the draw?  am goin try to find myself a spot this time to drag one out.  anybody got suggestions?  been all over the unit...missed  a spike on tammy springs last year and a partner converted on a cow at the ol pig farm a couple years ago.  nothing regular just dumb luck thats all.  this year I will be fruther off the road deep in the bowls of...you name the canyon.  i know they are there as the feeding station tells me so.  just another smoke pole in search of his own honey hole so mama don't think he's a no good so an so.  elk got to taste betta than a bacon cheese tag samwich...been toooooooloooonnnggg without a happy elk smackin mama.   HELP :dunno:

I have the modern rifle cow tag so if you leave me one I would appreciate it. The back side of tamarack is usually good for a cow they like to hang out and cross through there quite often that's where I am going to start looking.

Don’t waste your time down low during muzzy season.  The elk will be higher and people like me will be down low shooting quail and chukar.

Big unit but can be a lot of elk in it at the right time.  Good luck.

We spend a lot of time up there during the summer and my family hunts that unit during rifle season every year.  We see elk in the area we hunt all year around even when they are pressured.  If you travel up Hutchins road from Watt Canyon and take a left at the Y that cuts over to the northfork road.  The thickets to the right open up into smaller clearings and more thickets.  We concentrated on that area last year during my cow tag during rifle season.  There were a ton of hunters but the elk didn't want to leave and we ended up filling 4 of the 6 tags we had.  basically its the area between the Y and Tamarack Springs on the south side of the road.  Good luck.

Robinson canyon area just above thorp is part of the unit if i remember right? some one correct me if i am wrong...but if i am right that area during the rut once in awhile has a herd or two in there that would be worth a look for a cow during muzz season

A 408 lb bull was shot down low during muzzleloader season?  Go figure.

:)thanks for oall the great information.  many of these places are familiar to me.  so after my many scouting trips to the area...mama may be cooking up some elk after all.  i'll stay out of the lower areas...out of respect for CP's bird hunting trip...don't want to smoke you out.  besides i guess all the big bulls are down low.  like your area jbender seems like we spooked one out in that area a couple years ago.  a 408lb cow would be nice in robinson canyon.  but i'm not greedy just hungry for elk on the barby.  good luck to you all...and i'll try to leave one behind at tammy springs for the wall of wood man.

I've posted this pic before but since it's in your tag area I figured you could use the motivation to keep your spirits high for some meat.

:chuckle: PlateauNDN Mahalo nui loa (thanks very much) i've blown up the picture and mama has circled the one she wants...or don't come home :sry:.  thats truly inspirational and it will keep me going till the season...all 7 days of it...heats up my blood and I load up the smoke pole and sneak into the woods with the wind in my face and the spirit running through my senses till I become one with the  elk.
