Ok, so I managed to smuggle 1k out of my marriage. What I want to know is which route to go for my new 7mm rem mag. Do I
A.) Buy a savage through savagegunsmithing.com and have them do their thing for a total gun cost of about a grand?
Or
2.) Buy a tikka or some other rifle with the submoa guarentee?
-
Better save the marriage and give the loot back :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I would troll on the campfire and set the hook when the right stick trips your trigger. I can't fathom shelling a grand on a savage.....unless it was sporting about $700 worth of scope.
-
I aim to order a Savage 111 Long Range Hunter tomorrow.......in 7mm Rem Mag as well. Ive looked at everything in the price range, and you cant ( IMHO ) beat the accu stock and accu trigger .
-
That's actually the savage I was thinking of. He charges 3 bucks more than buds and does quite a bit of work. I figure it's a gamble either way.
-
Out of stock over here....have to order it. Who are you talking about, and what does he do to them ????
-
Buy the Tikka then figure out how to smuggle more cash to top it with some quality glass :twocents:
-
Being able to buy after market barrels and change them out at home is another of my reasons for deciding Savage.......
-
This is from their page:
The front ring of the action, the face of the barrel locking nut, bolt locking lugs and the bolt face are precission machined. This effectively makes the entire action, recoil lug and barrel as if they were one uniform piece to maintain 100% concentricity with the chamber and bore. Accuracy is improved. Shot to shot consistency is improved.
The Savage synthetic and wood stocks have no glass bedding in them. Without glass bedding, the action can shift within the stock and cause that occasional flyer thus causing larger groups. We glass bed the recoil lug area and glass bed the area of the stock that holds the action. The tang and barrel of the action are checked to be sure there is no contact with the stock. The glass bedding holds the action firmly in the stock when the rifle is fired. It causes the action and stock to act as one.
On the synthetic stocks, if requested, we put glass bedding into the fore-end to stiffen up the fore-end. The reason we do this only on request is that it adds a little weight to the rifle; also there is an additional charge for it. This is referred to in our pricing as Flex-Stiffening.
Every little thing contributes to a rifles accuracy. A Rifle with everything in line, without movement in the stock, will be a more accurate rifle.
Presently turn around time is 8 to 10 weeks. We would be pleased to add you to our list of satisfied customers by accurizing your Rifles.
Best regards,
SavageGunsmithing.com
I like the fact that savage is nearly as universal as remington's when it comes to smiths that have tools for them. I really like that changing barrels is easier (read cheaper) I like that the tikka HAS to be a shooter when I get it, but I'm not sure of the support that tikka has, just the fact that everyone loves them.
buckfvr. I tend to order budsgunshop.com
Man, I'm really not trying to throw out a bunch of companies on here. :sry:
-
Plus, the tikka is a bit lighter after all that.
-
I would be shocked if they glass bed that Long Range Hunter, it has an accu-stock which is an aluminum bed that the action sits in and then the recoil lug is locked in so the thing cannot shift.
-
Good point Jay. I wish savage would explain their lineup better. Pretty hard to tell the difference just perusing the specs. Didn't think this many people would even think about giving the savage the nod. Actually kinda surprise nobody wanted to try an change my caliber choice (thankfully.)
-
Try a Tikka, they all shoot lights out right out of the box with factory ammunition, they are also lighter than the Savage rifles and have far superior stocks. The stocks are probably the biggest downfall of Savage rifles with the exception of the Accustock, they are as good as a standard t3 lite's stock in function although (I believe) heavier.

I'm sorry but I have absolutely no idea what the bolded part means. I'm actually a transplant so maybe it's a local thing? :dunno:
-
24hrcampfire....look at the classifieds. Lots of high class guns move through there.
-
For a grand you could look at a Sako A7
-
I thought the Tikka with the wood stock was nice, but didnt care for the synthetic stock at all. Gun was too light, felt like a toy.
I think once you get into an accu-stock, you step above any of the others that are for the most part not bedded, or pillar bedded at most. Savages full length aluminum bedding block is where it all starts.
And Wraithen, whats not to like about a 7mm Rem Mag ????

Means lurk on 24campfire.com, and act when you see the gun you want pop up for sale in their classifieds... Unless I am completely out in a different ballpark here....

Buy a Remington 700 SPS/ADL through Bi-Mart right now for 369.00. Then you will have $$$$ for glass, the Wenatchee Bi-Mart has the matte blues for 369.00 and the Stainless 7mm Remington Magnums for 439.00.
I have picked them up when they go on sale for 339.00 just for the action, several of those actions are at Benchmark barrels right now.
-
Option # 2
-
Option # 2
Only thing I would use a frikn Tikka for is a jack pipe for a HighLifter jack and then I would leave it in the ditch so it didn't stink up my truck. So the next guy scrounging for what they THOUGHT was a rifle could pick it up and tote the pile of junk around for awhile untill he figured out what a big heap of CHIT it was.
I feel the same way about Barnes bullets, they just need to make one of those pieces of CHIT long enough for a jack handle.

Option #2 then spend the rest on glass.... Buying a Tikka will leave enough over to buy one of those fancy Leupold scopes with the turrets for Bullet Drop... might come in handy with a 7 mag if you are shooting mule deer at 500-600 yards...
-
Likelihood of mule deer is slim for me. Blacktail is what I'll be stalking. I do want this gun to be a long range rig though. I consider it long range when it gets past 300 meters. I already have a few scopes in mind, I'm purely talking rifles right now.

Do you feel this way about Tikka due to the fact that you spend thousands on a rifle to get it to shoot as well as an out-of-the-box tikka? Just curious.
-
Check out guns america they have some great buys I purchased 3 last year and they were nice. You just have to have them shipped to a dealer.

:yeah:
Go with the savage. There are some die hard tikka guys out there (not sure why) that love tikka. But imo they are junk.

Pretty much! Those that hate the Tikka are ignorant. Do they have the best finish in the world? No, but they will outshoot anything else in their class, and those that cost alot more! After getting one, I want to change all over to them, light, accurate, affordable, why not?
Savages are good shooters also. But I love the light stainless tikka

:puke: Tikka/Barnes.

:puke: Tikka/Barnes.
Lol. I expected more from you. Heck, I can even get Barnes touching holes out of my tikka.

I haven't tried them in my tikka yet but I did pick up a box for it.

Youll be happy, granted I went from an M77 that shot 1.5"ish groups to my tikka that shot .75" groups, then my handloaded barnes TTSX brought that down to holes touching.

I don't take it personal, I can care less what junk other people tote around the hills. My only concern is the junk I drag around.

Why do so many think that Tikka's suck?

Some only see what they want to see, they don't listen and wait to talk. You must learn to read between the lines. It is all to clear, some day you will crawl over to my side of the fence and hang your head in shame and only then will you understand your true denial of the fact that TIKKA'S SUCK!!! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Too accurate, now that's funny.
-
I think for the average situation the tikkas are great . when you stepping way out they drop off , plus you dont freak out if they get scratched .
-
I see people crying about them being ugly (yet they own two) or too light etc...All things you should have been aware of when you bought the gun.
Chuck Hawks finding the tikka's to be inaccurate only discredits him and apparently his shooting ability.
With all of the talk about ugly guns and using it to justify buying something else it reminds me of the way women shop. :twocents:
-
If I had $1k to spend on a gun, without optics, I wouldn't buy any production gun, I would build a semi custom.
I've put together sub .5 MOA Savages for less than $500 when using a Criterion barrel. Bump it up to $650 and you can have the action gone over by Shap Shooter Supply. $750 and a little patience will get you a full custom barrel which should shoot in the .3 MOA range. You could probably have the gun to want assembled and ready to shoot in less than two weeks.
I'm partial to Savages, but if you want to just buy a turn key rifle, they don't offer anything too interesting in 7mm mag. There was a long range hunter in 6.5x284 close on the ballistics.

:yeah: There are custom action builders that produce high quality actions for about the same as buying a gun for an action and then doing smith work. The truing and lapping, etc can make the prices nearly the same in the end...but you do get leftover parts with buying a gun first.
-
Now the 6.5-284 is a true performer and there are some way COOL 8) 6.5 bullets running about these days.

I have a Tikka T3 in 300 WSM. It shoots just fine at 500 yards. The Elk don't like them. Dropped right when it was hit.

Thats what it is. I love remingtons, but you can't beat the price to quality ratio of the Tikka or at least you couldn't. Don't know what there going for now.
