Title: Few more out of the shop
Post by: rbros on July 01, 2012, 09:00:54 PM
Thought you guys might enjoy looking at some stuff that going out this week.

308 Win ( NW Multigun donation, shoots 1/4moa with Hornady Match factory ammo!)

300 RUM

7 Rem Mag

Then there is this one.  This is our new wildcat based on a 300WM case that has been blown out, shoulder pushed back and angle changed, longer neck.  The result is a 180 Berger at 3200 in a 27" barrel.  So far, this batch of brass has been fired 9 times and the primer pockets are still tight.  Now that I know it works as I expected, I will get the new rifle put together with our new stock design and Rogue action.  There will be a few guys running them this year, then we will be bringing it out, most likely with correct head stamped brass from Hornady.

Here is a pic comparison.  The 7mm Rogue is on the left, a 7 Rem Mag on the right, and the first batch of dies from Hornady.

Accuracy (the dot is 1/2"), 5 shots + a clean barrel fouler

How do you make the rogue brass? Fire form?

Brass is easy.  Run a 300wm case into the 7rogue fl sizer, and it forms the shoulder and necks down.  Load it with the full power load and shoot.  It blows out the case the last few thousands.  Shoots the same with new brass as formed brass.

Bust out your wallet for the proper head stamped brass, there are some big time outfits that can't swing that tab or choose not to take the risk on the contract or sitting on a pile of brass with so, so sales in the chambering.

With 300 wm brass so common if they wanna charge a crapload for it I'll make my own. Already handloading it anyway, buying a custom die kinda sucks, but seems like a decent cartridge.

What stock is on the .308 and does it flex any when using the bipod?  That thing would look awesome on my rifle and would probably cut down on some weight.

Actually, Hornady offered to make the brass for it for a very reasonable price.  It wasn't something I was going to pursue, but they showed a strong interest.  Its not as expensive as one thinks.  Bad part is the lead-time in the industry right now.  Bertram is also going to do a little run for me.  So we will see how that brass holds up as well.  With as easy as it is to form, and as cheap as 300WM brass is, the proper headstamp isn't a huge concern for me.  But I will have some for the guys that are traveling abroad and need the correct headstamp.

Right now I have solid commitments for 20K pieces of brass between civilian and LE if I choose to have it made.  These were for guys that took an interest in the project before I had solid results.  If it continues to test out well through the fall, then builds will commence with it as a chambering in 2013.

The stock on the 308 doesn't flex at all.  The stock alone weighs in around 2.75lbs if I remember correctly.  I wasn't a big fan of the thumbhole style stocks, but this one is pretty comfortable.

Oh, forgot one thing.  The dies aren't a huge concern.  They aren't anymore expensive than a Competition die set....around $150.

That's a lot lighter than my 5.5 lb stock, who makes it?

Isnt that about a 7mm weatherby, falls right between the 7rem mag and 7mm STW

More capacity than the Weatherby.  A proberly(long) throated 7RM will equal the weatherby without any trouble at all.  The 7 Rogue comes very close to what my 27-28" STW's were running....within 30fps with much less powder.

Finally had a chance to get the more "final" version of the 7mm Rogue finished up late last night.  Still waiting on the new stock design, but bear season is approaching so I dropped it in an extra McMillan A-3 I had laying on the shelf.  Broke her in today and am happy with the little tweaks I made to the reamer.  My reduced "forming" charges are clipping along at 3147 with a 180 Berger.  Shot a nice little sub 3" group at 675yds with virgin cases with the forming load.  Will most likely run through these 100 cases and then load them up with the hot load.  The barrel should be stabilized by then.  Hell, the reduced charge is sub 1/2moa accuracy and plenty fast.

Specs:
R Bros Rogue Action w/hunter port
Broughton R Bros spec'd contour, fluted, 1-9 twist, 27" finish
PTG Alum BDL
McMillan A-3
20MOA Alum Rail
Jewell Trigger 1.75lbs
DE Muzzle Brake
DE Cheekpiece
NF 5.5-22x50 w/UL rings

Total weight w/o the bipod is 10.5lbs
The new stock design should get it down to 10lbs or at least the same.

308 Win ( NW Multigun donation, shoots 1/4moa with Hornady Match factory ammo!)

Got to shoot this at the NWMG and it is a shooter for sure! The people I talked to, from the match director on down had a blast shooting this rifle.
It was kind of funny as a lot of the 160 or so shooters had never fired a rifle to 600 yards before.
RBros rifles (Travis & Jesse) donated this rifle to the prize table and provided the 300 or so rounds of Hornaday match ammo for the shoot as well.
