Poisonous shellfish found at Quartermaster Harbor
By KOMO Staff Published: Jul 3, 2012 at 9:33 PM PDT
SEATTLE -- The state has closed Quartermaster Harbor to recreational shellfish harvesting after finding a poisonous toxin in some samples.
The state Department of Health announced Tuesday that Paralytic Shellfish Poison was found in shellfish samples taken from the harbor, which is on Vashon-Maury Island.
According to state officials, eating the naturally occurring poison can be fatal. It's found in clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and other species of mollusks. The closure doesn't apply to shrimp or crab, but officials advice discarding the crab guts, or "butter."
PSP is especially dangerous because harvesters can't see it and it can't be destroyed by cooking or freezing.
Commercial beaches are sampled separately and commercial products should be safe to eat, according to the Department of Health.

I think a good number of beaches along Hood Canal and the strait are closed due to toxins. I know it isn't super accurate, but I usually use the same saying for shellfish that I use for rabbits: Don't eat them in months that don't have 'R'.

I'm curious what your policy on rabbits is. Are they prone to carrying something funky as well??

Rabbits are covered with flees during the summer months. Most these flees carry tapeworm too.
