Any tips on how to pack food for a five day hunting trip?
-
What kinda tips are you looking for? How much food? What kind of food? On a 5 day hunt I would tend to shoot for aprox 1 lb of food per day depending on terrain and anticipated amount of hiking. If I anticipate a lot of hiking through rugged country or a longer stay I will bump up my food weight accordingly. As far as food itself, that's really trial and error... what you like and what your gonna eat as well as caloric needs. I use a stove, because I prefer hot meals and coffee and think it fuels my body better than "cold camping". but some guys prefer going "cold" and it reduces weight and cook time and prep. I eat a big breakfast almost always oats with protien powder, than eat light through out the day , jerky, trail mix, dehydrated fruits, and nuts. With a couple "bars" thrown in. Dinner is mountainhouse.

Not sure this works for everyone, but I eat light in the morning and afternoon, and then eat a mountainhouse or two at night. The morning and afternoon stuff consists of granola bars, trail mix, jerky and dried fruit. I find that if I stay plenty hydrated, then eating light during the day is all i need until I feast at night. Honestly, the consuming thought of a monster buck stepping out is all i need for fuel. Oh, and the berries arent bad either

If you don't want to eat light, have your camp packed in by an outfitter who serves your area. Much easier than packing your camp and game back to the trailhead. Hike in or ride horseback. Good idea to plan for a backpacking spike camp so you can spend a night ways from your main camp and get away from the trails and other hunters.

Are you driving in, hiking in or horsing in?

The High Hunt is a Wilderness area hunt but some trailheads are close to the Wilderness boundary. It is legal to hunt just beyond the boundary; sometimes only a mile or two up the trail. Blacktail could be found in the forest (on the west side) but most mule deer are farther in around the meadows and open ridge tops.

How would you pack food for a 5 day backpacking trip? If you have an answer for that...then you have an answer for your original question. If you dont have an answer....my advice would be to go on a 5 day backpacking trip.

MRE or something simular, if your only talking a weeks worth of food. That's about 5lbs. :twocents:
Then add a good water filter and pot to boil the water in and your set. :IBCOOL:
