Title: Tree stands
Post by: firehawk87 on July 11, 2012, 01:14:55 PM
Anyone have any advice on which tree stand to get or which ones are better than others. I was leaning towards a climbing tree stand because they look like they are easily moved. Also what are the pros and cons to hunting out of a tree stand? Thanks.

there was a good thread on this a few days ago but I lost it, I was leaning towards a good climber myself, but have never used one yet.

I use a assortment of different hang on tree stands.
I also have several climbers and NEVER use them.

The problem with a climber is you are committed to only hunting trees without limbs and then you have no cover below you.
When I setup a stand I want to have limbs under me and around me for cover, I DO NOT like being in the open both because I don't like getting busted and because I hate heights and limbs under me give me a false sense of security! :twocents:

Take a look at the summit climbers, they're the best I've used.

I also have an assortment of both and second what Matt said.  Nothing beats a hang on all set up ahead of time, good cover above and below.  Id be fine with out climbers.    :twocents:

I would take a hang on stand over a climber for my style of hunting.   I own 3 of them and use them archery elk hunting on the eastside.   I set them all up before the season starts that way you are not disturbing game as much during the season.

When I do use stands I go all out. I set up several hang on stands on different locations and use such stands according to wind direction and pay attention to over use. I also use a climber when I wish to strike out and find a "hot spot" when Im hunting a lul in the season.

But I also have ground blinds, both commercial build and good old fashion branches and such. I have learned to like the blinds over stands, but thats because Im getting more and more nervose about climbing into stands. I like being up and above things, seeing rather than being seen..but Im getting concrete legs now when I climb into a stand.

Good luck...patients is really needed when hanging on a tree.
