Do they allow Hang Only (for a week or so)?
-
I took a deer and elk I got there. When i went to pick it up I ended up with some beef instead of my elk. They said they didnt know where mine went. I got my deer meat. I will never use them again!
-
try hawk haven meats .
-
I've had :dunno: many animals cut up there with never a problem
-
Ive been disappointed with owens the few times ive been in. Dont plan on using them anymore.
-
Carek's in Roslyn. If they still are around, it's been awhile since I've been there.
-
I had last years elk cut up and packaged there. Great deal and they did a great job. Not sure about hanging though.

Owens meats is a member of this site. You might just want to PM them to get your specific answer. Here is what he goes by as a member name, "Don Owens".

If I remember correctly it's $20 a day...obviously they want your business...if it's for a day or two it may be worth it? Try fruit farmers...I was in a pinch once and found a farmer who was more than willing...he also sent me away with a whole box of peaches that were orgasmic and didn't want any $???!! The best fruit a man could eat. Perfectly ripe.
I've never had any problem with owens (I've actually enjoyed BSing with the guy who takes the game - forgot his name - but he wasn't there last year?)...I've always liked the idea of cutting & wrapping my own elk meat (I normally cut my deer up myself) but giving that I archery hunt, the heat is a factor unless you have access to a large fridge or walk-in. One day I'll have my own processing place for myself, friends, & family.
-
Haters don't answer questions.
twenty bucks a day is robbery. I will call them and get the truth- that's a bunch a BS.
They got the best rib eyes - buy them alot - along with spicy pepporoni every time I pass through.
-
Not hating but I won't let them do game for me anymore but I do love their jerky and pepperoni sticks to.

Maybe they got the cooler I'm looking for. thanks.

Diane runs the place after John died many, many years ago. I think she was his granddaughter or daughter, not sure.

Just finished off a bag of jerky from Owens. By far the best jerky ever made. I want more every time I go by Cle Elum.

Thanks for reminding me. Just ripped off a foot of Owens pepperoni and a small hunk of jerky for the pre-bedtime snack. :EAT:

I hated their jerky tasted like pot roast... give me some tators and carrots if I'm gonna eat pot roast....

Oh, that old guy died (I haven't been in there for years)? That's too bad but he did manage to poison me with what I think was old jerky before he left this earth. To be fair, I'd always had good luck with that place previously.
My departing gift to you: the runs for 3 days. Have fun!

John died probably 23 years ago.

John died probably 23 years ago.
Hmm...this was about 8 or so years ago. So, unless John made a special appearance for me, this was somebody else. I'm no expert on ghosts/spirits/paranormal stuff - only what I've learned from Ghosthunters - but I'm betting that there is a higher likelihood that it was someone else and not John's ghost.

Now you're making me want some...   I haven't been by there since January and now you got me craving...

Try some of Careks Kielbasa. That stuff is to die for.
-
 I got another pound of jerky Saturday Morn! Also got my in-laws hooked on it, so they bought a pound. While visiting, we mentioned we were celebrating my kids birthday, and they gave both kids a big piece of jerky stick. Kids loved it! I feel the Owens are good people running a good business.
-
hopefully we'll need a good butcher out that way this fall so ill have to keep my eyes on this post . thanks guys
-
I never miss a stop in at Owens when in CE. Last time I bought 3 yards of there meat sticks and polished off the whole bag on the way home. That stuff is like crack to me. Their jalepeno and cheeses brats are also outstanding. Never had game processed there, do it all myself, but I wouldn't hesitate. Seems like real good guys there.
-
You know, I have to chime in here. I got a moose in Spokane last fall and I was traveling back with it about to hit the pass when traffic was stopped due to an accident or something. THis was going to force me to miss my butcher in Puyallup. So i was forced with a decision to try someone completely brand new with probably the only moose I will ever get. I was very nervous about bringing it to Owens, but I have to say that it turned out very well. Their "grandpas Sausage" was good too. Other than I expected a few more steaks than we got, but it was probably due to our field dressing practices and the fact that we had many roasts. The only thing I would stress is communicating very clearly with them on how and how much you want processed.
Overall good experience for me and I would use them again.
Just my 2 cents
Kind Regards,
Brianb231

:yeah:. They do good work meat comes out and taste fine the only problem i have had was messed up orders twice now.

One thing folks don't understand on their questimate of "ripped off meat" is there is a Lot of waste when you prepare a carcase for table fare from feezer to pan. You want to trim it..................do it yourself. They gave me flawless meet on the last elk, but I want to do it myself this time.
Their game burger was the bomb last time. Think they put 5% beef fat in that was white as snow. That's what I will really miss but will have a go at it myself.
You guys that put pork fat in game are lost.............................unless of course your making sausage.
Tried bacon once for fat back on deer burger..............................yuk.
Right now the only answer to the orginal question was maybe $20 bucks a day. Yea hang that sucker for 7 days and I'll come pick it up................NOT!

Did you call Owens and ask yet? What did you find out?
-
I haven't called. Since I'm heading over east in a couple weeks and always stop there to-and-from I will ask them in person.
I'll post up the answer then.

Owens are a bunch of crooks. They should be shut down and ran out of town. It may be a little better around there since they got rid of Ray but I refuse to take any game to them. Had a friend drop a pig of to them a couple of years back. He ended up walking into the store and saw the best looking loins he had ever seen in there. Got his meat home and his loins were in the retail store being sold. He ended up with some other hog. :bash:. There are lots of stories just like this one but you get the idea!

that's kinda hard to prove ain't it? Im not much of a fan of Owens myself but how do you know they sold his meat?
-
I could go on for days the things some of the employees did but I said it before I wont air dirty laundry and these things came from the mouth of an employee to me personally. There are a lot of bad stories coming from there I personally never have or will take game animals there as far as steaks and ribs there great but for pepperoni and jerky Careks hands down is my choice.
-
I've taken items to them in the past and don't any longer. Always polite, always timely, priced ok. Love their pork and beef products. I just always got the feeling they were " batching" game meat. I would take in a whitetail from the poluse, but get some of the gamiest tasting steaks back. When I can taste sage in meat from an animal that had no sage within 30 miles of it seems strange. A buddy cut my deer up last year and I've encountered none of the taste issues. Frustrating to make a ton of effort on care of the meat only to have it seem like it was mixed with other peoples unknown meat.
Careks is a real good choice as well.
-
my hunting camp has taken several animals to Owens and never have had a bad experience. Nor have i had to question how much meat i got back. You cant expect a 90% weight return of what you take in, especially the people who dont de-bone their game. And as said before, Owens will beat any butchers out there with their meats and jerky. Their marinated chicken breats are some of the best too.
-
To follow up I've never had an issue with the amount of meat I've gotten back from them.
-
I like Owens for my grandpa's sausage and slab bacon. Our elk, deer and bear are processed at our meat locker and it always turns out fantastic. We like to know what we're eating. Deer and elk cube steak are awesome.

So bones and trimmings make up Only 10 percent? Sheesh, I'm confused....

Long time family from the area told me the story. I have also heard of someone dropping off an elk and one of rays buddies was standing there. The guy who dropped the elk off left. Ray cut out a chunk of backstrap and handed it to his buddy. Local talk or gossip what ever you call it. None the less came from a reliable source.

I called Owens today and asked if they will hang wildgame for a cooling fee (not for owens to process) or per day fee and they said "they only hang what they process". I'd like to know if anyone around there will hang/cool wildgame for a fee if someone finds out.

Call Robbers Roost in Ellensburg. Ask how to get ahold of Steve. He processes wild game during the season in their shop and is hands down the best anywhere around. Doesn't mix meat and is the nicest most honest guy you'll ever meet. You can also find him at Super 1 meat dept as full time job.
He is the only person I will ever trust with my game again beside when I do it myself. His pepperoni is the best in Kittitas Co. Have him do a batch of duck for you sometime too. If you aren't convinced he's the best I'd pay your butcher fee myself.
-
I can't believe not many butchers allow "hang only" anymore. (well maybe I can, but they suck) There's a place off Stratford road outa Moses that I called a few years ago and they wanted $25 per day if I remember correctly. Outrageous
Green Vally meats in Auburn hung my deer a couple years ago for $25 for the whole week. I thought that was a rip back then.

:yeah: Hey Happy! My brother Steve bought Robbers Roost a few months ago, not sure if he is taking in wild game this year other than family and friends[which keeps him busy :chuckle:]. 206, I may have a cooler you could use ( Ellensburg area) if it's not full of critters! A bottle of Pendleton is usually what we ask!

Ok, seriously do you know for sure what you drop off is yours when you pick it up ? I have had prime meat done in sausage, jerky, pep etc and dropped of a 7 yr old sage muley. The final product is the same. Was it my meat? Trust me, if you drop off a moose do you think those guys dont take a prime steak for them or their family? I dont know but?? I use a local brewery/sausage making company that is very particular what they take in. It must be in good shape, bone free, and vacume packed. I bone out my meat and vacume seal it in 30lb bags. Then in the OFF SEASON take my meat in to be done how I want it. A full-time butcher shop can get crazy certain times of the year. Especially during hunting season. Their mistakes are not on purpose but they happen. In todays world with cabelas offering so much in processing gear why wouldnt you do it your self. We do so much research when we hunt but then we don't care about the final product of processing our game? When in doubt do some of it yourself. As for getting a cooler during archery, I agree you have to find a meat locker to hang. Most good hunting spots are somewhat close to farmers and they all have a cooler. A 50 or C note would probably take care of it. Just my two cents or :twocents:

Great advice and opinion! I've always wanted to have my own processing place but I live on the westside and hunt the eastside for elk (archery). I process my deer because they are small enough for me to handle & haul home with a short amount of time (possible in the late season). Elk however are a different story...and it scares the crap out of me to head home because of the heat.
In most cases my meat is extremely clean, cooled quick, taken down to cooler within a day, kept dry, and butterflied to keep air flowing...it's rare for me to get a "cleaning fee". It always amazes me how nasty some hanging carcasses are when they come in. I know some guys circumstances can be extreme and keeping game perfect can be practicly impossible at times.
It would be a shame if Owens mixed meat and didn't give 100% back for what people are paying. I know of 4 elk processed there last year & lots more in the past.

I'll bring the BIG bottle since that's one of my favorites and then you can share. I'll keep you in mind as the time gets closer.

Good morning Teanaway Slayer. I couldn't help but notice a post you've made on the Washington hunting forum. It would be great if you could stop by, we would love the opportunity for you to meet us and become familiar with our way of doing business. Stopped in at the store a few weeks ago as I usually do when passing through Cle Elum. Those marinated chicken thighs were damn hard to beat, and the landjaeger lasted a couple days as usual. Keep up the good work.
-
Darn nice post Don. Running a small business is difficult and your attitude is excellent.
-
Yes, great post and offer Don.
You need to keep the store open later. So many times I come thru town to and fro and it's beyond closing hours. I need my fix of pep and land but I have I to go home empty handed because I choose not to visit brand x down the street. :chuckle:
Keep up the good work!
-
Thanks to all three of you for your posts! Regarding "extended hours"! We have changed the store hours. The retail store hours are now Mon.-Sat. 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The game processing hours are 8-5 Monday through Saturday. No game pick up on Sunday but we will take game animals in on Sunday with prior arrangements, just call the store @ 509-674-2530. Thank you again for your patronage, Don Owens
-
I dropped off my elk on Sunday afternoon. The guys at the processing plant were super friendly and helpful. This is my first time using Owens to process one of my animals, but they come highly recommended by a good friend of mine. If my elk tastes half as good as the jerky does every time I get it then I will be happy (and so will the girls at home :-) Thanks for the great service!
-
That reminds me I have a couple of deer to pick up..... I'll be up to see you guys! Owens Meats has butchered Beef,Pigs,Deer and Elk for me and my family and they have always done a great job!
-
206,
Meat Processor's charging $20-$25 a day to hang an animal that they are not doing the processing on seams fair to me. I do not consider it a rip off at all.
Meat Processors are there to make $$ and provide a specific service to there customers. They have utilities and employees to pay. They are there to process meat. Lets say they have a cooler that will fit 20 Elk or 40 Deer, they charge .50 per pound to process, and that a Deer Hanging is 150lbs and an Elk is 350lbs.
They are making $75 per Deer and $175 per Elk. So if they butcher all 20 Elk thats only $3500. If they do all the deer it's only $3000. That is if they are not doing any sausage or anything special.
If they were to hang a deer for 7 days that they are not doing the processing on it is taking up a spot in there cooler. If they were charging $5 a day that is only $35. When they could possibly have had 2 deer in that spot over the course of that 7 days and make $150.
-
good info to know. a friend just had some meat (elk) processed at Fisher meats in Issaquah , ill let ya know how it turns out.

I am not interested in coming and seeing your operation. Thanks for the offer, That was mighty white of you. Owens had my business at one point in time. What I have said regarding your place of business is my opinion. Thats what these forums are for. Things may have changed down there over the past 10 years or so but I am not willing to bring my animals to your place ever again. Owens had that chance and they blew it. So if any one asks I send them else where. I work hard for my animals and like to get them back.! I can understand your point of view of not wanting any bad blood. So I will leave it at that.

OMFG id have sued their asses for the total reimbursement for that many lbs of elk :nono: :nono: thanks for the heads up ill never use them for sure. someone said they are members here, they should crawl in a hole and hide with all these negative comments

I understand that you need to defend yourself and I respect you for the offer you made. The point you made about social media spreading a bad review and hurting your name is week at best. I grew up 2 miles from Del Fox and they have had a bad reputation for 40 years. It has even gotten worse in the last 10 years. My "opinion" is not from here say either. It is from personal experience and my brother worked there for a short time. Most meat shops are like that. Go to John Tuss next time and you won't regret it.
-
No one can beat John Tuss's meat! He's the only person we use for our wild game.
-
He is on Camano. I drive from Spokane to have him make my stuff. The best around.
-
Wow......discusting....harsh!
-
Why would a butcher do crappy work when their lively hood depends on it ? I think you guys are whiners . How many times do you buy meat at Safeway and it's totally tough, stinks etc ? Give all these meat cutters a break ! 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years in business might tell you something !! Find something legit to bitch about or stay on the westside...... you whiners are discusting !
don't live on the west side. Just letting people know my experiences from taking meat to owens.
-
Wow......discusting....harsh!
Not harsh at all. Just saying what I feel is right and needed. Harsh is cutting down a business that is older than most likely the whiners.... I get bad reviews on my fart smells, which are perfect ! :chuckle: :chuckle:

I also live on the east side and have had one bad experience with Owens as mentioned earlier. Unfortunately it only take one time for me to be done with them. The worst part about my experience is the did nothing to make right by it. As a matter of fact they made excuses and then blamed me....Shame on them. Had they made right by me....I would still use them (a simple sorry and maybe a few pounds of stew meat like I wanted with my elk). Because they used poor judgement and couldn't do what was right, our camp will not use them. It is really unfortuneate cause they did a fine job until that point. I actually have a hard time not stopping in every time I pass them, which is atleast 2 times a month. Really all they had to do was the right thing. :'(

Sounds like a good trade. :chuckle:
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:On another note I stop by whenever they are open driving through for the cheese stuffed pep. Love it.

Ya that Camp. And that KC Kracker who is asking about deer, elk, and bear jumps on Don like a arse. Pathetic. Like my mom once said to me probably long before Kc was even born " if you do not have anything nice to say then....."

I have known Doug and Don for many years they have always been straight forward with people. My uncle ran a small wild game butcher shop in Cle Elum for many years that I helped at, most of you would be surprised at the condition of the animal that some hunter bring to the shop and expect the butcher to fix. One I remember brought in a cow elk that had been shot through all 4 quarters , we spent a lot of time cutting that elk because of all the blood shot and we the hunter came to pick it up he was very upset because there was only about 150# of wrapped meat. He swore we had stole half of his elk and he told everyone that would listen the same story but he neglected to tell everyone he had shot it 4 or 5 times. If you talk to any butcher that cuts a large amount of wild game the last thing they want to do is eat it let alone steal it. The point is hunters are known to tell tall tales or embellish a fair bit so do your self a favor and take them up on there offer to stop in and see for your self how they do things.

It's not what they do when people are watching that concerns me...

Then butcher your own.

I do thanks

Welcome.

Ya that Camp. And that KC Kracker who is asking about deer, elk, and bear jumps on Don like a arse. Pathetic. Like my mom once said to me probably long before Kc was even born " if you do not have anything nice to say then....."
no, a customer, and member, getting screwed out of his ENTIRE ELK is pathetic. end of story, sorry but no price can be put on the time, money, energy, work and the list goes on, for what he lost, if you dont get that then your no sportsmen, hunter, fisherman, or even in possession of an ounce of common sense.

:yeah: Cut and hang all our own meat, grind, mix and make cube steak and it is fine eating always. We used to cut others but it came in so dirty, sandy, hairy, leaves, pine needles and shot up we now only do families.

Taken many animals there. Nothing but good things to say about them. My last two deer I have butchered myself and I really enjoy doing that. I do still take my elk to them.
-
If it is cold enough to hang in my shop I cut and wrap my own meat. I take September animals to Owens and I have for close to thirty years. They do a great job and I highly recommend them.
I think everyone should be a little more selective about what they say on the web. Trying to ruin someones business by spreading rumors and talking about something that may (or may not) have happened ten or fifteen years ago isn't cool. This site should not be used to try and ruin someones livelyhood. just my opinion.

Weren't you from the westside? Good thing no one told you to stay there huh? Another ignorant generalization.

I've never had a problem with Owens, we stop in there on our way to Lake Chelan all the time. Great meat. I have never had game processed there though.

That has to be the dumbest thing I've read on the board today. This comment isn't directed at Owen's, but seriously, what successful company that's been around for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50+ years hasn't cut corners or screwed something up before?
If you think length of years in business is a sign of a dependable product, I've got bad news for you.

What's wrong with the West Side? :tung:
-
I don't know why people are bitching about butcher shops being crooks, we all know they are.
Except for a few exceptions where it is necessary to leave your game somewhere, process it yourself.
If you take the time and effort to hunt and properly prepare and transport your game, why the hell wouldn't you want to be involved in every part of the butchering to make sure it is aged the way you want, cut the way you want and packaged and stored the way you want. If you just want to shoot something, get Call Of Duty and stop wasting game and crowding the woods.
-
Nothing is wrong with the wet side. I can shoot branch antlered bulls every year, almost always draw my second deer tag, chase monster blacktails, shoot geese every day of the week, murder dungees and salmon, and never drive more then a hour from my house. Also I get to have my wood burning stove going in this nice rain with my dog sleeping at feet. ;) Also if anyone wants help or to learn how to process their own game meat I am on the Kitsap peninsula and more then willing to help out. I have all the equipment and all you need is $ vaccume bags, PM me if interested.
:yeah: Very cool offer Sundance!!!!

:yeah: My one bad experience with using a meat shop was with this outfit as well and I said the same thing. Make it right somehow apology or whatever but, don't call me a liar and tell me I'm wrong. Aside from this post I have never bashed the outfit as a whole and I still stop in for some of the awesome products when I'm traveling by. Still a good shop for other things and they still get my business just not my meat anymore I tried 1 time and that was enough for me to continue to butcher my own game. Good luck with your business Mr. Owens and I wish you the best and again, you still get my business on your other delicious products.

:yeah: This is the right attitude. He is not bashing them, he is expressing his opinion after a bad experience, fair enough. He also states that he will be a repeat customer for other products. I think they should do something to make it right though, a lot of effort went into that animal that got wasted.
If a business does the right thing every time they don't run into these kinds of problems.
Kudos Plat

I don't know why everyone is fired up about a bad review or posting a bad experience, I commend it. It helps us decide on what we might do. I lost a whole beef to a bad butcher and after the experience I found out that others had the same thing happen.
It reminds me once when we had to take our daughter in for a second opinion to another doctor. The 2nd doctor was *censored*-footing around, trying not to make the other doctor look like a moron (which she ended up being). I had to tell the 2nd doctor that I was the one responsible for my daughter's health and not either of the doctors, all I wanted was an honest opinion. Finally I got one from him.
As long as the opinion is honest, what's wrong with that?

kinda odd every year there's a thread about Owens meat and most who have used them over the years has a story about a bad experiance , a lil more than quinceidence to me.

butchers do have to deal with a lot of animals that have not been taken care of. But When your getting someone else's untaken care of meat that isn't right either. I take care of my animal and it isn't right when most of the animal is awesome tasting and then you get two or three packages that I wouldn't feed my dog. I will tell you right now that it didn't come from my animal. When you have the quantity of animals that owens takes in, You are going to have to many mistakes.
-
My father, and I have taken more than 30 deer to Owens over the years. They've always done us right, are fairly priced, prompt, and take good care of our animals. I've been there when people have brought in deer that weren't even skinned out! You hear a few of these stories every year. Yet, they always seem to do their best with the hand they're dealt! While I was over there a few weeks ago, I was happy to see they're open on Sundays now, so I stopped in for some of that awesome pepperoni.
-
my issue with Ownes meat is their butcher area is not clean and they allow the animals to hang way to long. I had them do my first elk and never went back. The overall quality of the meat in their case, and speciality items are okay but nothing great.

I removed my post because I can't handle being criticized for speaking my mind. Yes, I did live over on the westside, but I lived on the eastside of all counties. Can't stand the abuse of the mentality of rain worshippers. I'm going into therapy on Monday........

Another thing I don't get when we have these "butcher" threads are the inevitable posts of "you wouldn't believe what the butcher gets into his shop" bloodshot meat, hide on, drug for 10 miles, etc. Why wouldn't a (good) butcher just refuse the carcass?
I butcher my own wild game, but why do I want my beef and hog hanging next to your pine needle and hair encrusted animal? It really doesn't matter what shows up at the butcher, if it is in poor condition (or anything other than a clean well taken cared for carcass) I would expect it to be refused and brought back in acceptable condition. When they take in an animal they are putting their name on every package of meat that leaves the shop, if they aren't willing to draw a line on what is and isn't acceptable I wouldn't want my wild or farm raised carcass in there.

This is one reason I process my own. I don't want to even chance my well taken care of game to be mixed with pine needle and hair encrusted animals. Chances are good that you won't ever see your original animal.
We have had 2 butcher shops shut down in our community for this kind of crap, hunters won't tolerate it and we become very vocal about it. Once word starts to spread, people stop buying from them.

I would like to butcher my beef and hog. It sure would save a lot of money. I guess I am just too intimidated and afraid that I wouldn't get it right. The different cuts of steak would be the ones that bugger me up. I am sure that I would "waste" (grind into burger) way too much good stuff.
-
I normally butcher my Owen but the weather changed. I just dropped off my elk off at Owen's. I hope the talk is just talk, but even hunter around camp said good luck with Owen's meats. That scared me a little bit. I don't like it when butcher's mix other hunters crap meat in with my sausage or burger. I always give people a chance, but if they F up my animal I will never use them again. About 15 years ago I liked to use this one butcher. The brothers were master at it for over 50+ years then sold it. I tried the new owners and they F'up my bear. They didn't even trim off the fat off the steaks and ground it with the hamburger. It tasted nasty. I trimmed the steaks my self and the meat was good after that but the burger was a loss. They didn't last and went under. Well!! I hope Owen's meats does a good job on my meat or they will loss a good customer for life.

Don't overthink meat cutting. Get a sharp knife and go for it.

I cut my own wild game, it is just my beef and hog I don't want to do. I want my ribeyes to look right, not just taste right. I also like some bone-in cuts and don't want to buy a saw just for that.

being recently moved to ellensburg , i dont think ill do business with them , to many bad reviews that i read , i cant just drop my game off and think about all these reviews and not know what im getting back. social media is a good thing in my opinion to get the word out for the bad and good

I have always butchered my own game. I do the steaks, roasts, stew meat, stir fry, burger, sausage. If I do salami or peper sticks that require a smoker BTKR's help me out with that since I don't have a smoker. . . . yet.
I seriously get a kick out of the people that freak out over seeing a deer being brought to the butcher with hide on it. Then I have to remind myself that the majority of you have never hunted in the South (GA, FL, AL, etc).
The majority of the hunters down there don't skin or gut there own animals. They sit in a tree and kill a deer, drive up to it and load it up, then take it to a Processor. They have butcher shops that are closed all year except for about 4 months out of the year. All these guys do is butcher deer and what wild hogs might come in during that time. The processor does all the skinning and gutting. So basically you bring in a whole deer and in a week you get a box of meat back.
I spent 4 years in GA when I was going to college working at one. I was the one that skinned, gutted, and hung them in a cooler, and we didn't have a rail system into the cooler. When they were ready to go to the cooler we put our thumbs in the H-Bone, put one ham on our shoulder, carried the deer the 30 feet into the cooler and lifted them on a hook to hang. By the time I left after my 4th year I could skin, gut, cut the head and front legs off in under 5 minutes if I wasn't caping. It was not uncommon on a Saturday Morning to skin 40 Deer and than do another 40 in the evening. There were a few weekends that the 3 of us would hang over 200 deer.
-
I noticed that when I was in Alabama a couple of years ago. I shot my buck, gutted it out and my cousins told me that they normally leave the guts in until they get to our other cousin's butcher shop where it is all taken care of there. It is cleaner, easier and you don't have a gut pile stinking up your spot and it is only a 5 minute drive. They can shoot 3 deer per day in that county so they like their hunting spots clean. :chuckle:

206,
Meat Processor's charging $20-$25 a day to hang an animal that they are not doing the processing on seams fair to me.
My cow is now in Basin Meats cooler in Moses Lake. $20 total cost for as long as I want it hung.
I wish I knew of a butcher that only charged a couple quarters a pound.
