I had planned on hunting early archery in the Kettle Crest Trail area but am out of the country for the summer, so no scouting. Does anyone have any information about the area as far as deer numbers and water availability. I get back the first week of Sept. and plan on hitting the mountains. Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

Good luck is all I can say..that is a tough one for stalking..tons of water in the unit and heavy cover where most big bucks will be for the day.

I hunted there about 15 years ago. We went up the wagon wheel trail to the kettle crest. If i remember right it was about a 7 mile hike or so. Didnt see any shooters,but saw a huge rub i would have liked to have found the deer that made it.

It isn't what it used to be. Now most of those dead burnt lodgepoles south of Sherman Pass have fallen and are waist deep and the new lodgepoles are so thick you can hardly walk thru them. There's bound to be some huge bucks in that stuff, but they are bound to be tough to find too. North of the pass is still quite huntable but gets quite a bit of pressure along the trail by hikers, horsemen and hunters so your best bet is to get away from the trails. Water is no problem up there as the deer know all the tiny little springs that are all over those mountains.
