HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has removed the name of the man known as "the father of modern elk management" from a conservation award after his family objected to what they called the foundation's "all-out war against wolves."
Olaus Murie's son Donald Murie wrote foundation president David Allen demanding the foundation cancel the award or change its wolf policy. The foundation supported removing federal protections for wolves, donated money to kill wolves that prey on livestock and has supported wolf hunts and trapping.
Allen says the foundation removed Olaus Murie's name from the award recognizing accomplishments in wildlife research and conservation because it is not going to change its position on wolves.
Olaus Murie was a naturalist, author and wildlife biologist who conducted groundbreaking field work on elk and caribou.

It is because of RMEF's position on wolves that I would consider joining or donating to them again.

 Great to see them stand there ground

Now if I could convince them to hold a banquet somewhere else other than a tribal casino, I might join again.
I am happy to hear they took this stance. The mans son should be ashamed of himself.

Good to hear

I've been a member for probably 18 years now, but the RMEF was VERRRRRRRRRRY SLOW to come around on the wolf issue, IMHO. Their early positions were very squishy and made a lot of head room for wolf reintroduction...... I think they trusted the wolf lovers when they said "15 breeding pairs" even though most of us knew better.
I'm still a member, but my support turned very luke warm over this exact issue several years ago. I'm glad they've finally grown a spine over the issue, but they should have been in the fight (on the riht side) years earler.
