I'd probably look into hunting GMU 516 if I had that tag.  Curious to see what others say though................

Mt Adams or goat rock wilderness areas or nooksack if it were me, it should be filled in two months on one of the rut hunts though.

NAH ..Nooksack has been wiped out ...you may find a 300 bull if your lucky ... it will take years for this unit to get good again  :twocents:

He does know that the rut would have been the best time, right?  :o

This time of year, I'd probably hunt the Margaret.

He still has more than enough time to kill a bull.

Hunt the watershed :)
He cannot hunt in the watershed with that tag, I would recommend the white river, when the snow flies the elk come down from the park. If he want's someone to show him around and I have some free time I will be glad to help. He can PM me for info also. If he just wants any bull and doesn't mind a small one, I would agree with bobcat, but there are much bigger ones in the white and they don't have hoof rot!! I can't believe he didn't go in the rut thought, what a missed opportunity.

Sounds to me like he doesn't care about getting a big  bull, or he would have hunted already. So why not just go to the Margaret, shoot a spike, and be done within an hour or less?   :chuckle:

My advice might also change depending on where he lives. So where does he live?

Do you know what this guy is looking for? There are still a few hanging around. We saw a decent 6 yesterday but I agree the rut was the time. Btw the 6 was easy access.

He wants a respectable bull? He has never done much elk hunting. He has to hunt with whatever weapon is open during that season and does not bow or muzzleload hunt.  Jerry

This seems to come up every year about this tag, I believe he can use any weapon till Dec. 31st in any unit that is open for hunts. Except the green river watershed. Someone know for sure?? Where is he located?? When can he hunt??

He may not be able to hunt Margaret at all then, except for possibly December 16th. I know there is an archery permit from December 1-15, and there is a rifle cow permit right now, to the 30th. So actually I guess he may be able to hunt tomorrow and Friday. The muzzleloader bull permit got an extended season from December 17-31. If he's interested in Margaret, he should call the WDFW and find out when he can legally hunt there with a rifle.

Read page 17 of regs, must hunt archery season with archery equip. And so on, if no season open he can use any weapon.

Which means he could use a rifle in between archery and muzzy seasons aka during the rut. Or before archery, or during deer season.... as long as muzzy or archery were not open he could have used a rifle. I'm sorry but it sounds like a wasted opportunity...

No hunting in Nooksack, Watershed, elk area 4941,and 1 other I think his paperwork says  :dunno: Like I said,he is not much of an elk hunter and only rifle hunts and he had no clue  as to where to go.

Does he need anyone to go with him?  If he were to get on this message board and ask for help, I bet someone would take him out and "guide" him to a bull.

Talk about showing up late for the party. The bull I was talking about is in the nooksack.

Get this guy on the forum. Have him introduce himself and someone will help him find a bull. It hurts me reading this thread, but there is time for this not to be completely wasted.

White River

I agree. That's where I would be.
Title: Re: Westside incentive elk tag
Post by: Curly on November 28, 2012, 07:09:36 PM
White River is only open to special permit hunts, so there hasn't been a lot of pressure there.  Sounds like a good place to be.

Any of the other units around the National Park would be good too, I think.  654 (Mashel), 516 (Packwood), 513 (South Rainier)........ a check of the regs shows that they don't have ML or Archery seasons going on right now in those units (I just quickly looked, I could be wrong), so those units would be worth a look too.  Snow should push elk out of the Park, I'd imagine.

Try the Lewis Unit.. get up as high as the snow will let you, find the big boys still hanging out...

Can not believe he has waited till now to fill that tag....  wow.. but to each his own...

He did not apply for this permit, he was chosen at random.....he has never killed an elk and does not really hunt for them, has very few hunting friends,so please do not bash him, thats why I am trying to help him fill this tag.

Hiking permits have no limit, I believe there are still permits for driving too. You would have to check the website.

just a little FYI I drive though the WR hancock every day for work and so far this year I have seen 3 poached bulls in back of gamee's(probably all bruce) truck, seen at least 4 or 5 big bulls in indians trucks. So good luck hunting the WR.

And actually there was almost 3 weeks between the end of archery elk and the beginning of muzzleloader elk.

Who cares where he goes....... if he cares so little about a tag most of us would die for.  Just boil the tag on medium high for 10 minutes and have "tag soup". Those are the kinda guys you like not to help.

whats a incentive tag? never heard of it. is it a tag that he can hunt any season, any weapon and any elk?

Check out page 91 in the Hunting Pamplet, different than the Multi-Season tag.

So is the "incentive tag" no longer special tags intended to provide an incentive for early reporting to avoid a last-minute rush before the Jan. 31 hunter report deadline ?

I take it that within your groups with archery, muzzy, and rifle, no one got the big guy down yet. One of the rifle rut guys got the twisted 6 that seemed to be summer running mates with the one I think you guys were chasing.

Or maybe your talking about something totaly different.......

I'm not sure that was a incentive tag, the regs read that you can hunt until the end of the year but you still need to use the weapon for that corresponding season. Sept. in the Teanaway is archery if I'm correct? :dunno: He must have shot it between seasons if he used a rifle? :dunno:
