Going to buy a bow this weekend and hoping to get enough time at the range to be ready for the season. Any thoughts/recommendations for the 101 area. Not looking for any secret spots, just some info on what it has to offer and any advice for a first time bow hunter.
-
Some big deer come out of this unit. Scout drainages and other waterways that deer travel.
-
Thanks. Plan on heading out there in the next few weeks to scout around. Have been studying google map to look for some good starting points.
-
Any other advice?

Carry a pistol with you in case you see bear, cougar or a really, really big yote :chuckle: :chuckle: Good luck bow hunting is a blast.
-
good luck.. i hope your a quick learner.. or atleast have someone experienced showing u the ropes.. depending on how you are hunting you could be looking at some longer range shots 40-50 yards dont let buck fever get the best of you and make a shot your not comfortable with.. thank god on my first archery deer i made a great shot i honestly cant even remeber aim lol

Tons of public land with lots of deer. Bring some cameras and find some good rubs and set them up there. I'm from republic and hunt the late season hard. Be ready to run into a lot more west side A holes than u would normally expect, its getting more crowded every year.

I hope you are at least talking about the late season and not Sept 1st. During late season (NOV 10th) most people set tree stands over bait. Extremely thick. A little better in Nov when the leaves are off and there is snow on the ground. Like strattonje said "I hope your a quick learner". Good luck.

Thanks for all the input. I plan on spending quite a bit of time on the range in order to become proficient as quickly as I can. Won't go out until I feel confident in my ability. I was planning on heading out to scout the next few days and hoping to get out early season but guess I can make that call after I get out and walk around a bit.
Thanks again.

If you've never shot a bow before you've got your work cut out for you to get up to par by hunting season. I would plan on the late seasons rather than the earlys just because it will give you more time. I don't want to discourage you but you've got a steep learning curve ahead of you. Let us know how its going.

it will be tough if your just learning..even the most seasoned hunters in this unit are discouraged at times. Big country and Big bucks..my suggestion is to find a area and learn it and hunt it for awhile..almost all areas in ferry will have big bucks in them.

Shoot, shoot, and shoot some more! I know that has nothing to do with the question you originally asked, but it takes a lot of time to get comfortable enough with a bow to make shots under pressure, like in a hunting situation. You should be able to find some deer to hunt. Not trying to be that guy, but bow hunting takes a lot of work, just make sure you get a lot of practice in so you can confidently make a good shot if you get the opportunity.

If you are going to hunt the early season mule deer ground blinds over the cattle water tanks that are all through the hills... Late season for whitetails tree stand over bait or rattilin them in.. Lots of public ground what part of the unit were you thinkin bout hunting?

And the learning curve extends to how to hunt and where to hunt within unit 101......may take several years to get your spot and the right trees, but regardless, you should see what you seek.

Just a question, what draws you to 101? If you are from Spokane, there are multiple places for hunting just north of town. Just curious as to what draws you to 101 for a first time bowhunter.

I was thinking the same thing. you'll be driving by a lot of quality whitetail country and some good mule deer country to get to 101.

The dates for 101 whitetail are optimum........................late season.

Everyone learns at a different pace. I bought my bow and shot multiple times every week for two years straight before I felt confident enough to go afield and attempt to kill an animal. We owe it to the game that we are pursuing to make a clean and quick kill. Shooting indoors is great practice if you are just going to be shooting in a league or at indoor tournaments. But good practice for hunting situations you need to get outside and in the timber or sage and do some stump shooting. Indoors and outdoors are a big difference when judging ranges as are hunting timber or wide open sage areas. Hopefully you already have a good range finder. Use it. It will be your best friend while hunting. Archery shooting and hunting are a blast but at the same time it will be easy to get discouraged. You may get lucky and kill a giant whitetail your first time out or it could take you years to get your first kill under your belt. I hope you get lucky :). Good luck this year.

All your feedback is greatly appreciated. As for what draws me to 101, word of mouth really. Have been talking to just about eveeryone that I have met who hunts around the Spokane/Colville area, and they seem to think that the Sherman Pass area would be a good place to start as there are some decent fire breaks and access. I am coming from Nine Mile, so it is a bt of a trek, but defintely doable. I am defintely open to suggestions to other areas closer to home that may hold good numbers of deer and perhaps fewer hunters. I don't have a stand yet, so will probably be spot and stalk. Would prefer whitetail, not trophy hunting more focused on meat really, but won't turn down a muley if they are out there as well. Also I don't mind hiking in a bit.
Thanks again for all the help.

If your goal is meat hunting only I bet your odds will be better close to home. Spot and Stalk for whitetails with a bow is doable but it's definitely tough in this country. In the prairie's of the midwest its much more feasible....That being said I do know plenty of people that have done it here in WA.

Remember also that 101 is closed to mule deer during the late season (I've seen some monsters :() but is open for any whitetail. Early season it is 3 pt min for mule deer for the 1st half of the season and 3 pt min and antlerless the 2nd half of the early season. Whitetail is any buck for early season. Good luck!

I could give u reasons why I do it :chuckle:

Me too, just wondering why for a first timer! Not easy country for spot and stalk!
-
spot and stalk in 101?? good luck..I have been in that country for 10 years and yet to ever walk up on a buck...glassing one up would be next to impossible..if spot and stalk is your game I would be hunting parts of 127 and 130
