Taking the boat out to puget sound tomarrow and was wondering where, how and what bait to use for flat fish like flounder. This is my first time out on the sound and any help would be much appreciated?

Pink or purple jigs in 40-100' of water with a sandy or gravel bottom. I have used the purple/pink/white darts to good effect for them.
-
You could do well jigging with herring on the bottom around Posession point at the fish haven west of the green buoy ..we caught whole bunch last week some double hook full :chuckle:
-
Go to richmond beach. drop any meat to the bottom. Count to 2. Set the hook. Reel up fish. Really easy.
-
I tip my jig with a little worm. Keep em all......great crab bait. I think limit is 15....check the tegs.
-
We always hit the sandabs and bring home a cooler full. They compare with flounder and you can get a bunch of them with alot of action. Herring chunks for bait.

The limit is 2!
"Year-round season. Daily limit is a total of 15 BOTTOMFISH (see definition page 10) regardless of species,
subject to individual limits and seasons as shown on previous page. Fishing for BOTTOMFISH prohibited in waters deeper than 120 feet."
"OTHER FOOD FISH Year-round No min. size. Daily limit 2 of each species."
Pg. 115

"WAC 220-16-340
General definitions — Bottomfish.
The term "bottomfish," unless otherwise provided, is defined as including Pacific cod, Pacific tomcod, Pacific hake, walleye pollock all species of dabs, sole and flounders (except Pacific halibut), lingcod and all other species of greenling, ratfish, sablefish, cabezon, buffalo sculpin, great sculpin, red Irish lord, brown Irish lord, Pacific staghorn sculpin, wolf-eel, giant wry mouth, plainfin midshipman, spiny dogfish, six gill shark, soupfin shark and all other species of shark, and all species of skate, rockfish, rattails and surfperches except shiner perch."
Looks like the limit is 15 flounder or dabs.

One of us is reading the regs completely wrong here!
Did you see the part I quoted from the bottomfish portion?
"OTHER FOOD FISH Year-round No min. size. Daily limit 2 of each species."
Without a specific exemption for flounder, dabs or sole I take that to mean you are only allowed "2 of each species". Can someone please explain to me if and how this is incorrect?

I think it's 15 (or what the total bottom fish is for that area) the way I read it. Other food fish from the regs is on page 11 and reads as below. Flounder is not listed as a certian species that has a limit in any area so it falls into the bottom fish listed on page 10, which are counted as total bottom fish. My :twocents:
Other Food Fish When used in this pamphlet,
this refers to species which occur in our waters
irregularly, usually in coastal areas during the
summer months and includes barracuda, white
sea bass, bonito, yellowtail, and pomfret.

I think I was reading it too literally, "OTHER FOOD FISH" is actually in Definitions as you point out rather than referring to Other Food Fish than specifically listed. I think WDFW must employ someone with a degree in making *censored* confusing to write this crap!
15 it is, makes sense now...Thanks!

FC, I feel your pain. At one point I thought for sure I was legally fishing on the Cascade but after reading the regs over and over I finally concluded what I was probably not legally fishing. It always cracks me up when I open the regulation book and notice that the table of contents includes a line on how to use the regulation book. One of my best memories of using the book correctly was when I had to run off into the woods in a hurry for a nature call and discovered that the regs could double as TP. :chuckle:

Sorry FC, but Skillet is right.
Nightcrawlers work very well for sole. I don't like herring because you catch to many crab. I have only caught 1 crab on a worm. 30' through 100' is good. Sometimes the deeper you go the bigger the fish, but not always true.

i hate when i catch crabs on my worm!!!!! :chuckle:

I've done the same a few times and I've also used it as emergency fire-starter :chuckle:
