Title: Could someone tell me what kind of fish this is?
Post by: bwhntr350 on August 05, 2012, 05:19:48 PM
Caught it today in Summit Lake on a green pumpkin tube in 8' of water. It did not really fight much. Hate catching weird fish as I do not know how to handle them, you know, like do they have teeth? This one did not. I started to lip it but then went for the gill plate.

Isn't there still a bounty on them or did that go away?

I have only seen squaw fish when they are small. I was fishing a river and kept catching squaw fish so I would just throw them on the bank behind me. A fish and game officer checked my stuff and asked if I was the one tossing them up there I said yes it was me and he thanked me and said kill as many as I could

The Lewis and Clark expidition coined the term "Squaw Fish" as in only fit for a squaw to eat.

When we fished that lake years ago it was choked with trout.  It was amazing fishing and the the salamanders were everywhere.  It was one of my favorite lakes.  It was also one of the clearest lakes I have ever seen.  You could seet 10-20 feet to the bottom and count literally hundreds of salamanders.  To Bad it now has squafish....especially if they are fish eating machines.  Sounds like the could devistate a lake that size.

There are a ton of them in Lake Washington.  I hate them.  They take my worm when I am fishing for perch!

The dams around here used to pay people to catch them around the dam fish ladders because they eat so many salmon smolts.  Haven't heard of any "Squawfish Derbys" lately.  :dunno:
