I had one and I bought the cheapest ammo out there. Just buy a good elk cartridge because that's a lot of thumping power going down range. I actually have a box old 338 loaded ammo you can have. It's Winchester 225 gn SP, 20 of 'em. Just figure out how you pay for shipping from me and you can have them. Where are you located ?If he doesn't take you up on that offer, i will ;)

I handload 225 Accubonds... they work amazing.. I have also worked up 210 partition loads that are just flat screaming and knock elk flat.. they leave the barrel at 2950 fps...
I reload because of the savings... those Nosler bullets in Federal ammunition is 65-80.00 a box. I reload and get as good if not better performance for less than 30.00 a box.. and I still get the premium bullets.
