Today was the first time I've ever been hunting. Lots of scouting, lots of woodsmanship my whole life... Just never got around to taking the hunter ed class.
Anyway, 30 minutes in, I got a decent sized blackbear. It was down this super steep hill that was covered in blackberries, and a little over a mile in... I didn't skin it in the field. I think that might have been a huge, huge mistake. I got him out of the jungle by about noon, and back home, still unskinned and in a large cooler w/ 3 bags of ice at about 1. By the time I was home he had got stiff and started stinking pretty bad, and the flies were pretty interested. How bad did I mess up?
If I messed up, no excuses. Just ignorance and a mistake I won't make twice. I'm going to feel pretty bad if I took this beautiful bear for nothing.

You never took hunters ed??? How did you get a tag?
-
If you got it today it should be fine. I would bet the smell will clean up with a good scrubbing with vinegar and trimming.
Get the hide off and get an experinced hunter there to help asap.
Any member close enough to help him out?
-
If he is old enough he wouldn't need to have taken it. Regardless......do you think it is a stinky bear or stinky meat? How long after the shot was he recovered?
-
Location? Have knives and can skin.
-
So he's butchered up and in the cooler now? Does the meat itself smell?
Hindsight - always know what you're going to do with the animal before pulling the trigger.
I don't hunt bear, but my rule with elk is get the hide off, animal quartered and hung ASAP. If doing your own butchering and freezing, freeze in a cooler with dry ice (flash freeze), because depending on the amount of meat your freezer is going to take too long.
Just read newer posts ... If now get the hide off!
-
Alot of bears stink get the hide off quick and it should be ok if it is from today. All dead animals will get stiff. Good luck

Negative, he's in the cooler, still not skinned.
I thought I had a good plan. Good plan isn't as good as I thought now that I've done it. WIll have a better plan next time.
-
If the bear fit's in a cooler whole it's not that big of a bear.
Get the hide off. Get the meat off the bone. Start cooling the meat down asap. If the meat does smell try wiping it down with white vinegar as mentioned earlier. That will help if the meat is not too far gone.
-
Regansquad,
I would take up H20hunter up on the skinning offer. An experienced hunter will be able to tell you what (if any) is bad and what you is salvageable.
-
Follow billthkidrocks advice skin, and cool the meat down quickly.
Bone to the meat will expedite cooling.
You can then butcher, package and freeze later.
:yeah: on taking h20 help.
My experience is with elk not bear, and am in Bellevue (520 closed). But if need be......
-

Congrats on the bear! Glad all worked out to get the animal skinned and cooled down. The meat should be just fine, glad you got some ice on it! Using a stick to open the abdomen, where you gutted the animal, helps release a lot of heat.
-
Fixed
-
Wait until he shoots a bull. He might think it's bad as soon as he walks up to it. :chuckle:
Just remember with any game, especially on hot days, get it cooling down as quick as possible. Keep it clean and get the hide off. I helped a guy out, who's meet started turning green, cut the souring meet off, separated that meet and wiped down the blade of the knife after each fillet of meet we removed. I was able to save most of the meet for him. The green can spread very quickly, so only use this approach on stakes and keep it away from any grind. A butcher won't touch it, if it spreads across the animal usually.
-
We got bears to skin I'm coming over.
-
Never more in my life do I wish I lived in Lake Stevens
-
H20hunter answer your phone! You need me to come over? Has boo boo arrived?
-
He's probably cutting.
1. Just go over there.
2. Take a camera.
3. Drink his beer.
4. return home
5. post the activities on here
6. Profit??

Done and done!
Pretty little sow......probably 125 on the paw....all black healthy dry sow. She didn't smell bad at all......smelled like a bear. I didn't see any meat at all that needed to be trimmed due to spoilage. The butcher can trim off what he shot up. Man did he punch this bear. One arm was almost severed and the opposite side rear ribs had a hole that should make you .30-06 shooters proud. We got it skinned out, rinsed off, and back in the cooler in under an hour. Even got the tooth pulled for him. D-Rock stopped by....said hello.....and the brother in law helped out as well. The happy hunter is packed up and back on the way home. I've got a few pics coming to me via text from the brother in laws phone. I'll post them up and he can tell you the story later.
Good times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I figured it was just "bear" smell since it was still early. That was why I asked if any one with experience could help.
Glad you offered. That is what makes this site great.

Here is our trophy shot. He was posing with the hide (obviously) doing the hero pose. My brother in law was tying to egg him one with the "show me your killer face" pose. He played along nicely and as you can see we have a skinned out bear and a happy tired hunter in my front yard. Also, for your information, this guy is a BIG dude. the hide may look small next him but hell, so do I.
-
Congrats

You guys on this site are awesome  in the past few weeks i have heard more good deeds done than i can remember. awesome

here is another one for you.....taking forever to get them off the phone.....
-
thats basically the same picture :chuckle: long day?
-
Very cool! Once again, Congrats to all involved in this success story!
-
Yep...it was....fixed it.
Yes.....kind of a long evening thanks to the two growlers of beverage we had. What a fun time. Very cool to get to share a first time success hunt with a fellow hunter. That is really what it is all about. Sharing experiences, meeting like minded people, and helping out when you can. I've been around long enough that a few people know that I'm not totally full of s**t....okay....mostly. But when it comes down to it....it is all about putting a helping hand out there for those of us that need it. One of these days I'll acutally shoot one...not just help carry one out or skin one....acutally shoot one. Then, it will be my turn. Until then...well....I'm just happy to be of help when I can.
H20hunter out.

Great story, glad it all worked out. Karma points for you H2O.
-
If this isnt the thread that shows exactly what huntwa should be I don't know what is...
-
i love all the posts saying the meat should be fine.. I have had 2 bears rot on me in a couple of hours one was skinned and quarted in 1 1/2hr of killing it it and on ice the next hour..the next am the stinch was so bad it was unbearable..... no idea why that happened..another was gutted and layed open in the shade...had it loaded on a quad in 2 hrs taken home within 45 min and the whole side of it layed on was rotten! Bears are nothing like dealing with a elk or a deer.
-
You guys on this site are awesome  in the past few weeks i have heard more good deeds done than i can remember. awesome
this site has some of the best folks and most willing to drop everything to help each other Ive every seen. HWF really truly is more like a family then a forum. we all should be proud to be members here.
congrats on a nice bear
-
huntnnw.....nothing to worry about on this bear. He had done a good job of gutting and cleaning it out. It was opened up all the up and through the throat. In the cooler the bear was hide side down on the ice. When taking the hide off the thicker parts of shoulder and hips were cold to the touch. I think one thing that worked in his favor was the size of the bear. If it was a big one maybe it would have taken longer to get out and cooled down. Regardless, he is going to get some good meat.
Hopefully the whole story can get posted up today. Sounded like a quick yet exciting hunt.
-

Thats what I was thinking in the beginning... guy goes out for the first time and whacks a bear... yeah right! Good job on your first kill man, and kudos to you for asking for help.
-
I assure you the bear was very dead indeed. Didn't even twitch when the hide was coming off.
-
this is why i love this site.
-
Good helping H20!!!! Stand up guy imo....

What a great story... both the hunter willing to ask for help, and for the fellow members willing to help out!
Way to go!!
