I have a nice wallow in SW Washington with a creek that runs through it with tracks all over. Almost callid in a bull there 2 years ago. I plan on going down there and sitting on that wallow all day. Doesn't stop it from being crazy hot. Man I hope it cools about 15-20 degrees by the first weekend in Sept. Wishful thinking though, huh?
-
If it doesnt than it is going to be a maddening zoo once again. I looked foreward to this season so much and now its roasting hot again and the ten day forecast does not look good. Problem is it needs to rain by the last week of Aug or 1st day of Sept for the Timber Co's to re-open if there is a fire closure in the next two weeks.
It is not looking good at all :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

The weather forecast app on my kindle shows mid 70-mid 80's for the next 15 days for the west side.

Yea, I got locked behind a gate last year.

Unfortunately its not looking good J I may be elk hunting around the house if things continue like they are. If it cools off I better start clearing some shooting lanes in the mess from last years storm just in case.

You're lucky. I have to drive 90 miles to my spot

It's nice to be able to hunt around the house for a fall back, but it's so damn thick I have yet to have an ethical shot at eny of the elk I have seen.

This is what the Farmers Almanac has to say for the PNW:

4th-7th. Fair weather deteriorates to stormy conditions Washington, Oregon. Turning squally in Idaho.
8th-11th. Fair.
12th-15th. Mostly fair initially, then unsettled.
16th-19th. Pleasant, tranquil weather.
20th-23rd. Unsettled.
24th-27th. Gusty winds, but drier.
28th-30th. A return to unsettled weather.
October 2012
1st-3rd. Fair and dry.
4th-7th. Very unsettled.
8th-11th. Fair and chilly.
-
That actually sounds like a nice forecast at the moment
-
Sounds like great huntin weather to me. I love the rain, keeps the fair weather hunter at home but now I have to go buy more rain gear.

That will work for me, as long as we get a little wet so we don't get locked out

No

they can accurately predict the weather around here 3 days in advance...that last week of August well know for sure what the first week could be like..it always starts to cool off by then
-
DoubleJ you can come hunt the herd by my house with me. I need someone to help pack my elk out first thing opening morning. Then we can pack yours out as soon as we finish up with mine.

I am there. After the cougar fell through, then the bear, we need to hook up on these elk. PM me the details
-
sorry to burst your bubble guys but I think we will be in the 70's through the 15th of Sept.
-
Probably in the minority here, but minus the chance for any closures, I pray for hot and dry. The hotter and drier the better.

I kind of agree on some levels. I have a nice creek fed wallow to hunt if it's bad

I'm with you. In my experience, bears are like us. Sunny weather brings them out. I do hope for a good 2 days of heavy rain to avoid the closures though.
-
Just spent the weekend around St. Helens....HOT..HOT and more HOT!!!! Hard to remember the last year we had much rain or cool weather during the season.

Lol, no, I hike my tail off. It is just that we have always seen way more elk when we have long, hot, dry summers. Wet summers and the elk are not really in the area that I hunt. Also, the elk are way more spooky in the rain. It is o.k. to have a long, dry, hot summer and then rain just before to quiet things up a bit, but if the temps are in the 80's when I am hunting, I am happy.
And when I say "we", I mean my father and I. He no longer hunts but he roots for a dry summer for me. He is on my side even though I out-hunted him all my life, haha, and he still says I cheated some how:)
-
May have to go chase those elk I heard about that roam the summit of Rainier.
-
It looks like the forecast is for some cooler weather with considerable cloudiness in the next week or so in SW WA. Hopefully there is some precip!!
-
hancock is already closed to fire danger im sure every where else is too
-
Well I hunt Eastside and it is always hot lol. Except in the AM. So I prepare and expect hot weather every year. 8) Those unexpected cool days are always welcome!
-
I overheard a couple of guys over at skookum yesterday talking about how the state might shut down ALL OF ITS LANDS over the entire state before the Holliday weekend if we don't get rain soon. They were saying it's a knee jerk reaction to the houses being burned in the I-90 fire.
Anyone hear anything about this?
I think it's going to rain last few days of aug and first couple of sept so we wil be fine.
-
Weyrhauser hasn't updated their phone line since June 2nd
-
Sept. usually brings in the cool nights, but days are still warm here in E. Washington. And it will have to rain a lot before the dry vegetation stops sucking up the water.
-
No signs up on Vail gates, yet.

Negligent workers started this fire on a state contract. How about they keep the woods open for the responsible citizens? No rain in the forecast for the next 10 days. Hopefully the last 5 days of August will be different. Lighting tomorrow?!? :yike:
-
Yeah I will take the rain but not the lighting!

Depends on which area you're talking about. St Helens was updated on August 1st. I also just discovered that the same information is now available on Weyerhaeuser's website. I believe this is a first. Always had to call and listen to the message before.
Here is the info for St Helens:

Called for Pe Ell

OK.
Here's Pe Ell: http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/pdfs/businesses/recreationalaccess/PeEll-Hotline-Message.pdf (http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/pdfs/businesses/recreationalaccess/PeEll-Hotline-Message.pdf)
I know Pe Ell doesn't get shut down as often as St Helens.

I didn't call last year when I went around Montesano and got locked behind a gate. I was PISSED
-
I got a feeling that its another replay of last year. 90s for the first week and the last weekend rainy and cold.
-
Looks that way... Last year it was in the 90's when we packed out my elk. I flew down the hill so I could get it to a butcher ASAP. Haha it was hot!
-
I got sprinkled on today. It's a start. It is still August though.......................
-
Rain in the forecast for Wednesday on the west side. Any little bit will help.
-

Was it a green dot road?

I don't remember. Gate was open for me to drive in when I got there at 3:30am. When I went to leave at 8pm, gate was closed. No cell service to call them for help. PISSED!!! I managed to get out but I was pissed. My fault for not calling ahead of time I guess
-
The area may not be open for vehicle (or even foot) traffic even if the gate is open. You may very well have been driving where you were never supposed to be.
-
It was open for vehicle traffic. I do remember that.
-
Where were you? Often times I see open gates during archery and muzzloader season but they are rarely open to vehicle access. People still drive in though, past me on my bike. Constantly. It's got to be posted with a green dot or with the bright green signs on green diamond land saying its open for recreational access.
Us archery hunters get kinda screwed on access but it's better that way to me, the animals are much more easier to find and hunt without guys driving around in their rigs.

Rain mentioned in the forecast for tomorrow, Thursday and next Tuesday. Hopefully the system early next week drops some decent rain.
-
I hope one of these days the weather man is wrong and there will be a downpour for a couple days.... :bash:

Saw that too. Looks like Tues-Thursday of next week could rain any day especially Thursday.

Lots of times gates are open because they are hauling out of an area. Still closed to vehicle traffic normally though.
Spent a lot of time up in the St. Helens tree farm over the past three weekends. More green than I expected with the hot weather we had. Hopefully a little rain ( or a lot) next week will get us into and though season. Don't need a repeat of last year.
-
I washed my car yesterday so the Spokane area people can thank me for the bit of rain this morning.

Hell they are always wrong! LoL
I'm with you, just wish they were wrong in our favor!!

I was amazed at how wet and green it is up there.

Well the forecast is calling for cooler temps for the archery opener but not much to zero rain in the forecast. I don't expect the west side timber companies to open their land anytime soon. Bummer.
Pass level temps will be near the freezing mark during the overnight hours on some of the passes early next week.

Yeah that really sucks! One of the longest stretches on record with no recordable rainfall. Looks like the Gifford Pinchot is going to be open so lots of state land E of I-5 available to hunt. I'm changing my plans and heading up to some state land in the Winston or maybe even the Siouxon
