Just spent last night in the woods and bull kept me awake most of the night. He was making a growling noise with and occasional bugle. What's up with the growling all night?

Not sure, but let me know where you heard him and I will go check it out and let you know

i have heard bigger bulls anounce themself at night with growls as they come into an area. It sounds awsome and scary if you dont know what it is.

Ive heard them make some seriously strange sounds. When they bark I think it is the weirdest.

We had a bull around camp one night that sounded off at 2am. He sounded just like a fog horn. It was really weird. He made this completely monotone bellow for several hours. Bwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... Cant imagine what that was all about.

According to Elknuts, it's a warning sound. Bulls do it because they hear something and want to make sure whoever "it" is is intimidated. I've come to trust what they say. They describe the behavior that coincide with some of the stranger elk sounds I've ever heard. If you are curious about elk sounds, check out their website!

Great sound to hear. Last time I heard it was in New Mex. We were chasing a herd bull around for days that we nicknamed Ole growly, because he roared instead of bugling. Elknut is right, as this guy was roaring to get rid of all the satellite bulls that kept trying to sneak in on him and his girls. Great times!!! I can't wait for archery opener!!
