I just got involved in the Big Brother Program and I am looking for some stuff to take a young kid (8 years old) out to do.
I wanted to take him fishing, but I don't want his first experience to be boring.
He lives in the Everett area and this would be afternoon kind of stuff.
Can anyone share any places that might be good to take a youngster out to catch some small trout, or pan fish? I do have a boat that we can go out in so shore or boat is fine.

Rob....you can drive across the trestle and throw a line in at the public dock of Lake Stevens. On the west side of the lake is easy parking for something like 8 bucks or so. A weight and hook with a worm will catch perch all day long. North is Kayak point where a little hunk of squid and a hook will catch fish. There area few other lakes in the Lake Goodwin area that you can plunk power bait for trout.

Lake Stickney south of 128th and west of hwy 99 might be able to hook into a trout or two. Also has bass, perch and crappie. Boat launch is on the north side of the lake.
Silver Lk east of I-5 and north of 128th should still have some trout left in it too.
It is a bit of a drive but the lakes that h20 suggested out towards Kayak Pt would be a good choice.
And good for you in doing this!!! :)

Twin Lakes up by the Smoke Point Costco, one lake set aside for just youths and the other open to all, good from shore easy walk around lakes

Is your boat sound worthy? If so you could go out around the oil docks in edmonds and catch flounder hand over fist. Just drop to bottom, set the hook and reel em up. It wouldn't be hard to catch 100+ in a few hours. Some are decent sized too.

all great ideas!
Thanks!!

Totally forgot about boat options. Get out while crab is still open and you can pull some pots. Plenty of catching and hopefully do some keeping. Drop a hook with a jig and turkey and drag it along. Flounder city.

I think we are headed to the PS to put some hurt on the flounders (or cancer traps as I call them)
Great idea, not sure why that did not occur to me.
I'll see about crab next week if he likes the boat thing. This will be his first time in a boat so I don't want to over due it!

Rob....here has been my go to for flounder. On the mainline I run an ounce or so little cannonball and a fat swivel. Leader from swivel to a steelhead jig tipped with turkey or chicken. Drop it down and simply drag it along. I've been doing this over on Hat, SE corner in 20 to 30 feet of water. The turkey stays on the hook really well and my theory is that dragging it along stirs up the sand and they think a little shrimp is popping along waiting to be eaten. The bottom is nice and forgiving and I've only lost one jig in a few trips. I'd keep the founder and use 'em for crab bait.

Or keep the flounder and use them for flounder bait!

I've caught flounder also when I haven't been trying. Has anyone put them on the BBQ?

We took the boat out last night. I asked him if he wanted to fish, or go for a boat ride, he decided on a boat ride. We launched from Muk and ran to the buoy at possesion point to see if we could see any lion on the buoy. we got lucky and found 2. one jumped off the buoy and then jumped back on and they made all kinds of noise talking to eachother in the process. Then we cruised over to the shipwreck to see it and ran across a porpoise on the way so that was a real treat. We found the obligatory harbor seal over by the shipwreck and then headed in.
First time he had been in a boat, and the first time he had seen any of those three animals. So a good trip. He wants to try crabbing next week so that is what we shall do.
Thanks for all the info and advice! I plan to try some of the other places for fishing as well.

Sounds like a nice trip. One thing that could be fun when crabbing is to run out, drop pots, then order a pizza. Have that pepperoni bad boy delivered to the dock while your pot is soaking. He'll think he's in Heaven.

creative idea, I like it!

If I've leaned anything with my boy and the outdoors is that you have to keep moving, keep it interesting, and keep them intersted. The moment boredom sets in you've lost them. Granted, my son is only 6 but he is teaching me quiet a bit.
Besides, who doesn't like pizza?
