It wasn't on saturday when I was there. Have you called the hotline?
-
Not yet. But I was hoping to do a little more scouting this weekend and I was just wondering. Maybe we will get lucky and it will stay open!
-
I was surprised at how damp it was up there. It rained a little off and on while I was there too... fingers crossed.
-
Great to hear^
-
It's closed to all motorized access, according to the message dated August 1st.
The public land "corridors" as they call them, are open, so you can drive into the big block of state land (in the Toutle unit).

Typical Weyco operating procedures. Closing their gates is one way to keep their logging operations safe from idiots during the work week.. because no matter how many signs they put up about active logging going on... some people HAVE to get to that spot on the other side of the operation... It also keeps their equipment from being shot up...
Oh, and they really do not want their timber going up in flames either...
-
I wish I could catch one of those SOB shooting up equipment, my dad was a logger and it was unbelieveable how much damage they would do, and cost the pour jipo logger a ton.
I think I could shoot their rig up a little with out feeling to bad about it.
That and the gARBAGE oh my When we were up Toutle area there were certain roads that had just a ton of beer cans and garbage, we picked up some but could of spent a whole day there. Those are some other people I'd like to catch.
-
It's been a few years since they opened up the woods for archery and that was the worse hunting year I've ever had I will never hunt another year up there when it's open for drive in :bdid:
-

Show me 1 instance where this has happened by other than nature ot a work crew.
As much as I dont like it.I understand why they lock the gates. But this isnt a legit reason.
-
know why they lock those gates ?
Its the fricken methheads and vandalism more than anything
I have talked to my share of loggers up there what they told me was after the second idiot put sand in the second high dollar processors hydraulics they slammed the gates shut everywhere they can.
Also fools would haul old crappy trailers up there and leave them all season while they cooked meth in them.
-
I'm not concerned wether or not it's closed to vehicles. I'd just like to be able to bike in there opening morning.

Check out the Featherville-Pine Fire in Idaho (Trinity Ridge Fire) that is going on right now. It's burned over 100,000 acres already and it was caused by a human on a ATV. Plenty of fires caused by people but you only asked for one.

I'm with you John. Actually I'd prefer it to be closed to motorized vehicles. INCLUDING quads... I heard one in there last weekend. Ripping around in the Margaret, talk about frustrating
-
Don't forget Weyco. sold off a huge chunk of the Margaret in the last few years. Could be you were hearing the new owners exploring their exclusive playground--with exclusive access to the Mt. Margaret backcountry--which is still owned by all of us. (You just can't get there.)
But there is hope. The USFS is trying to get some of it back--at least the High Lakes part.

IMO there should always be access/an easement to public land regardless if most of it was purchased around the public land and the only way to it is through private land!
-
as of august 15th all port blakely lands are closed to all public access, including walk or bike in. NEED RAIN!!!

I was a long ways from the private land areas your talking about. I'll be scouting the backcountry this weekend.

Fireweed or anyone else that may know the answer;
The section of noble fir that was sold off a year ago... how do I find those boundaries? I have yet to contact anyone of help and want to be respectful as possible by staying off private posted land. I have this years Weyerhaeuser map, which shows nothing, and none of the other maps I have show any boundaries either. Any help or suggestions on where to find this information would be appreciated. Thanks.
-
Calling for rain this weekend and early next week! Looks like a good sign

Keep in mind Just because the gates are open DOES NOT MEAN THE AREA IS OPEN TO PUBLIC MOTORIZED VEHICLE. You have to call the hotline. On several occations the gates were open however not to the public only work crews. Promise you you will get a ticket.
-
hello everyone the new guy here been archery hunting for 4 years now for deer going to try for elk this year in winston unit
so my question is if the fire danger is to high will they even lock out foot traffic?
-
so my question is if the fire danger is to high will they even lock out foot traffic?
Yes, last season it happened the first weekend and stayed locked up for a week when the rains came in. Having it locked to vehicle traffic is a good thing in my opinion.
-
i hope the gates are locked, my boots are shinned and ready to give me blisters im just curious if they lock out foot traffic if the fire danger is to high if so i need to work on a back up plan
-
^ helicopter access.

Yes, if the woods are closed for fire danger, then no access is allowed of any kind.

The "noble Farms" partion you are talking about is posted "no trespassing" at the gates only. I didn't even notice any signs until I went to a gate. The maps I have show it "sold" from about opposite the Castle Lake viewpoint, up to the High lakes (that was previously sold). Go to the Cowlitz Co. assessor website, look up T10 N R4 E sections owned by Noble Farms LLC. Keep in mind, according to state law on timberland the land must be conspicuously posted or the owner must personally communicate to you that it is closed. So.....if you don't see signs, technically, on timberland you are not trespassing. I know, the WDFW says it is all on your shoulders to know exactly who's property you are on and have express permission to be there, but that is not what Wa state law requires.

You may have to look towards heading out to National Forrest land, DNR land, or private property owner's (farms, etc.) that border timerlands and may have animals traveling back & forth between the two.
-
I don't think there's any thing to worry about this year! Last year we dealt with 90+ temps and this year 70 and rain in the forecast!! Good luck to you guys!
-
:yeah:
It was 97-98F with 15mph winds from the east for four days before they closed it. weather looks solid this year.
-
I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :IBCOOL: Hopefully we can all BIKE or HIKE in next Tuesday. No trucks.
-
It hasn't rained in 36 straight days. The only rain in the forecast is a brief spit. I would be worried.
-
weyco will close the day before the season, you watch!
-
The Weyerhaeuser access hotline was just updated today, and I don't believe anything changed from the previous message. It's still no motorized vehicle access, except the "public access corridors."
-
port blakely is still closed to all public access. no foot traffic, sucks because that is where i put in all my time and energy scouting the last couple years. might be looking for a new area on opening day :dunno:
-
weyco will close the day before the season, you watch!
I say 2 days after it opens, the close to public access on foot
-
Thanks for the great advice Fireweed and Bobcat. That clears up a lot!
-
Does anyone have the 800 number that they can post. I would like to put it in my phone
-
1-866-636-6531
The number is in the hunting regulations also.
-
if Weyco closes to foot traffic where should i go and still have odds of getting an elk not affraid to put in a hike just spent all my time scouting the winston unit not knowing better my fault thanks any help would be great
-
Thanks BOB you the man
-
Hotline updated 28 Aug. Still open to walk in .

The Weyco. so-called "public access corridors" are not legal easements, and also close when Weyerhaeuser says they close. Unless a county road goes to DNR, King Weyco. has control of YOUR public lands in SW Washington. Dirty little secret--no legal access to most public land here.
-
:yeah:
Last season when they closed the woods a few days into the season, Wey.co left a printed note on my rig, it said something to this effect. As of today the land you are parked on is closed. If your vehicle is parked here tomorrow you will be towed.
When the tree farm is closed to all traffic that includes the access corridors.

I ordered a Capital Forrest map through here on-line, had it in the mail box a few days later, a little over $9.00 total.

Weyco. updated the hotline on Aug 28. They are still allowing non-motorized access, but will not open any additional gates for hunters. Only "access cooridors" are open. These cooridors generally go to public land or public property (like the WDFW Green River fish hatchery, and the 35,000-acre DNR block in the Toutle Unit). Basically this means walk-in & bike-in only. This still leaves lots of places to hunt. Hopefully, they keep it this way and don't shut off walk-in.
PS. Back-forty bull is bugling!
-
Hopefully things do not change this weekend. Weyco had a fire late yesterday afternoon on there Pe Ell tree farm near Baw Faw peak. 15-20 acres multiple helicopters and DNR fire engines were on it and appear to have gotten a handle on it. This is just the kind of thing to make them think twice about public access especially with what looks like a big warm up coming next week by some forecasts. Not good.

I have a sickening feeling we are going to get a repeat of last year.

Here's a map to where they are located. Doesn't list hours, but I assume Monday thru Friday, 8-4:30, or maybe 5:00. You surely won't be able to get a map this weekend.
Try the "Go Hunt" map on the WDFW website. It shows public lands.

Because of the holiday, Tuesday will be the earlist that you could get in or call to see if they have OTC purchases.
-
call the hotline ;)
-
I gotta think we would know if its closed by today, being opening day and with the current forecast I would imagine they have their mind made up. According to the hotline its still open... fingers crossed!
-
is it closed?? :dunno:
-
As of 20 minutes ago, only closed to motorized vehicles except for the public access corridors.
