WD40 is great stuff but it is a solvent and should not be used as a lubricant or as a corrosion preventative.  Use it to clean and to displace moisture then wipe it off and apply a layer of grease or oil.

If you want a spray on rust inhibitor it is hard to beat LPS 3.

I always sprayed it all over my outboards that lived in a salt water slip and it seemed to keep the corrosion down for me. I am sure there are better products as listed above but wd40 worked for me for 15 years plus.

I use Corrosion Block. Boe-Shield would be another good choice.

WD-40 isn't good for much. Maybe removing Obama bumper stickers.

Met some Gammies that had just come out of the brush lookin for someone.
They asked if we had some WD-40 to clean their guns.
We helped them out.
They were both carrying Glocks.

I only use WD-40 in my blackpowder gun after I clean with hot water, to make sure all the water is out of the gun.  WD-40 is a water-displacement chemical, not a lubricant.  Years ago I used it to clean my skeet guns, and after a while I noticed a gummy crud building up in and on the gun.  Went to a good gun oil and had no problems after that.
