Well instead of spending 11-15k on a side by side this is what I came up with. I took the advice of a few people and came up with this bad girl!!! 92 Suzuki Samurai!!!!! Looked at about 40-50 of them and this one just poped out at me. So me and TwoSixFourWins made the trip down to Portland today and picked it up. Got a few little things to play with and get fixed the way I want. Plus a few small add on's to make it mine :chuckle: Should be a fun rig and haul 2-3 guys around and keep us dry. Also it will crawl around well!!!
-
Nice....
I've wondered about those rigs, are they geared low enough for off roading?
Looks tight for room, what's it really like?

My buddy had one. I barely fit in the passenger seat LOL. Aside from that a great offroad rig.
got a winch, Matt?
-
It's not bad in the front the bucket seats are o.k for the big 6'1 260lber :chuckle: It has deeper seats then I thought. I am not use to such small pedals :chuckle: The back is a bit tight but has a fold up bench seat. I can cram a deer into :chuckle: Yeah it started life as a 4x2 and the guy is a crawler who put it together and geared it down. Has a back end and power steering out of a side kick in it. Lockers and all that good stuff. He put a lot of time into it and made a nice rig. Lot's of small stuff I need to do. Like make and put handles on window to roll the windows down, without using vice grips. I have a couple little plates to weld on the bracket to keep the brake light off. Have the back part of a roll bar to finish welding. Has a very seal leak in the the transfer case. He gave me a seal to fix it. Fix the glove box and Lot's of small stuff like that.
It's a 92 and has 78k on it. Run's and starts like a top.
Josh I just looked at one. It's a 4k and new at coastal for 700.00 the rig comes it right at 2800lbs. I am thinking that would be about right!!! I have a 2ooolber but I don't think that would work as well :chuckle:

So you're going to put this:

into that?

-
Oh I see you already did :tung:
Looks like a good find, been kinda eyeballin one of those myself but I don't think I could get 3 kids and a dog in the back.
I need something a tad bigger
-
Carp just cut into the wiring and do a switch for the brake lights, that way its still street legal if needed and you can kill them for off road
-
KFHUNTER:
Already been in and out more then a few times today :chuckle: So yes :chuckle:
That is one sexy pic! I know why you saved it!
Good old camo booty!!!! One of the first companies I started shooting with  They treated me well and I rocked there stuff as you can see
Sebek556. It's already street legal. The brake light is in the dash saying that the parking brake is still on when it is off. Should have been more clear sorry about that, but it's a good idea. I was already bombing around stark in portland today :yike:
-
I'm glad you got thick skin carp :chuckle:
-
ahh the dash brake light... sharpie or a little bit of nail polish takes care of those quick and easy..
-
Nice pick CARP...Good on gas and don't have to worry about scratchin her all up...i got 2 Bronco II's that i drive around hunting...i love em great gas milege i've put 4 guys in it and gone in some shady spots....places you wouldn't want to take your daily driver.
-
Yeah :chuckle: The guy I got it from was driving 50 miles a day back and fourth from work :chuckle: He is wanting to get a smaller car. He has a 2nd one that is all converted and caged up, true rock crawler style, 35" tires etc. This one is more of a off road but still street legal ride :chuckle:
They are supposed to be pretty easy to work on and my buddy is a pretty handy mechanic. He gave me the nod so she came home with us today :IBCOOL:
It get's around 20 with the 32" tires on it. I think when I do put new rubber on it I will drop it down to a 30". The 32's are a little big on her.
I'm glad you got thick skin carp :chuckle:
You know it :chuckle:
-
I've built a lot of Sammy's in my day, in fact that's where Wazukie comes from. They are very easy to work on! If you ever need any help or advice on them just PM me Carp. At one time I had five of them in the shop, that was back when you could pick them up completely stock for between $200-$500 dollars. I bought my first one back in 92'.
-
That is great to hear Wazukie  Thanks for the great offer. I might have to take you up on that someday. Hope it is not any time soon but everything with a motor needs some love at some point :chuckle:
Right now it just needs lots of little things done to make it better. Not things that are really needed but things I will just fix for OCD sake :chuckle:
The one thing it does do is shifting from low to high. It sometimes kicks those 2 bars into the same line and binds the shifter up a little. It is a easy fix as you just pop the plastic dust cover off. Unlock the retainer ring and pull the shifter handle out. Then see which one needs to be slid forward or back and move it. Then drop everything back in. Takes about 5 minutes to do once you learn how to do. We have already done it twice playing with it. Just puts a little grease on the hands. Not sure how to keep it from doing it. I am sure once I figure out the sweet spots. I can shift it without them locking up. That's the only thing that we could find that is a bit off about it. Runs like a top and drives pretty nice. The lockers make it a little jumpy on sharp corners :chuckle:
-
If its doing what I thinks its doing here is the fix: http://zukioffroad.com/Tech_Library/tcase_shifter_bushing.shtml (http://zukioffroad.com/Tech_Library/tcase_shifter_bushing.shtml)
-
Oh ya, and sometimes this bolt shears and needs to be replaced, good to replace it if you do the shifter sheet.

-
Yeah that kinda sounds like it and might be the fix for the problem! Thanks a bunch for posting that up!
-
Congrats Matt. Looks like my old Sami only smaller, I had a ton of fun in mine, wheel bearing are a weak link though with the bigger tires.
-
:twocents:
You're gonna want a bigger winch.
I saw a Sammy with a quartered 5x5 roosie bull in the back with the rack...a deer should be no trouble.
Congrats.... it'll be a fun ride.
-
Thanks guys. I can put a lot into this rig before I even come close to what a 800cc ranger was going to cost me! :yike: I had my insurance place check for a new ranger for a year of coverage! 700.00!!! Can't even drive it on the road! I put full coverage on this bad sob for 37.00 a month and after hunting season when I am not running it as much. Liablity is only going to be 19.00 a month :chuckle: Cant beat that!!!
Is smittybilt worth a darn? I just saw this 8k for 300.00

Congrats makes me wish I would have kept mine. As far as the Smity winches go I had one on a my last TJ and it worked great every time I needed it too.
-
Thanks for the info.
-
Just for your info 4wheelparts.com has them on sale for 269.99.
-
That sounds like a great deal.
-
If your trying to save money or on a budget you can always look at oak harbor freight, they have pretty cheap winches, :twocents: and other stuff like high lift jacks and things like that for pretty darn cheap
-
My Uncle had one for @ 5 years..... I remember going up and around Jeeps stuck in the snow..... Those things just crawl around very well.... Can get almost anywhere....
-
You will be happy with it
The darn things make there own gas, compared to a jeep but if you think you are going to squeeze 3 guys in there to go hunting, you will be disappointed, you will have to leave the gear and guns behind to fit in side that thing :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I thought about getting one, that was until i tried to get in to one :bdid: I am too tall. my head pressed against the roof :bash:
As for the winch, Smitty build will do you just fine. I have one but have yet been in a situation where I have needed it yet, so I cant testify for the durability of it yet.
Talk with Ron at http://store.4wheelingplus.com/ (http://store.4wheelingplus.com/) good guy, located in Elenberg, has great deals often and one hell of a nice guy
And if you are part of this forum, http://easternwashingtonadventures.com/forum.php (http://easternwashingtonadventures.com/forum.php) he gives an extra 10% discount.

Glad to here you got somthin street leagle! Those side by sides are for the birds! Im sure there fun but for the most part not so practical.
-
They are great rigs Matt. Bud Story had/has one he put on little floatation tires on it to check the cows in the winter time. Me and Dad used it a couple times to go up on the hill to check Charles cows and that sucker worked like a champ! If you even see Bud you might ask him if he has any tips for you.
Once again Congrats!
-
Looks like a fun rig. Best off road vehicle I ever had was a 1962 Willys Wagon. You could put that baby in low range 1st gear 4x4 and literally out walk it down a steep hill taking baby steps. Used to pull guys out of the sand dunes in Moses Lake in CJ's that were stuck. They would say....how are you going to pull me out and then not be stuck. Well would just bury myself in front, unhook Koenig winch, pull them out, then put the Willys in four low and crawl right out. Left those CJ guys scratching their heads in the rear view. :chuckle:
Had a Hurricane 6 and a 4 speed on the floor. Wish I still had it. Lots of room for three as well as our gear behind second seat. This thread makes me want to replace it.
-
I have never filled up a rig for so cheap :chuckle: I order a ton of stuff for it today. I will start a project thread when I find time to start working on the stuff.

OH NO, HE'S HOOKED ALL READY :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w: :4w:
Either way, its still a JEEP, Just Empty Every Pocket :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Lot's of parts all over the place! I got a great deal on it as well. Need to finish some crap up so I can start taking it apart :IBCOOL:
-
Gasman gots it right! Emty the pockets baby!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
All my stuff is starting to show up! Looks like a dang parts warehouse! :chuckle:
Huge thanks to Wazukie!!!! I ordered that seat for the transfer case. It got here yesterday and when we got back from hunting today. Dropped her in and omg! No more lock ups and shifts like butter!!! AMAZING!!!! I got to reading and I guess pretty much all of them will do that at some point of there life. Mine is a 92 so most of the tranny stuff and problem got worked out in the 90's and on models. So I should be golden now!!!!
Cant wait to start doing some upgrades!!! Bought 2 bed liner kits to paint the whole outside black with bed kevlar bed liner :IBCOOL: Then I will probably air brush on some silver graphics :IBCOOL:
-
Not to jack your thread but how did you do today? Were you hunting on Fenton Lane?
-
Yep until ray did a slow drive by and decided to stop and spook the deer :chuckle:
I am not hunting yet just trying to get my buddy/hired guy a meat deer for his freezer. Had a nice fat doe picked out about 70 yards away and was on the last part of the sneek until ray came by :chuckle: His name was mud yesterday :chuckle: I told my buddy "what the heck ray knows it's me"
I have been beating people out of there morning noon and night. With all the road closers all the dang people are out looking to start some problems :bash:

:chuckle: :chuckle: Yeah sorry about that. I was with him. After words I was like I think that was Matt. He started telling me oh yeah he does have a truck like that. He says he has to appogize to you for that. Hope you get your buddy one.
-
:chuckle: Ray has 2 or 3 sets of binos in every truck! Ray is a '10' on the human being scale!
-
:chuckle: LOL no worries all fun and games. Just a doe. Now if it had been a 180" buck then I might of cried a little :chuckle: ran 2 guys off of his place yesterday. All these Dang people are driving me nuts!
