Title: First season deer hunting ever... Tips?
Post by: reagansquad on August 27, 2012, 11:43:51 AM
Hey guys, I'm about to embark on my first season of deer hunting. Being a first year hunter, I've already snagged a decent little black bear. I'd like to keep my streak alive. Any tricks or tips you'd like to share with a newb hunter?  :twocents:?

Are you hunting blacktail, muley or whitetail? That would make a difference. Best advice? Get out there before light, and stay till after dark. Find a good cross trail or clearcut and hang out there for awhile and glass. Find a gated area to walk in to or get at least a few miles from any road. Then your chances will increase substantially! Good luck!

Don't get disenchanted if you don't get something else.  You are already ahead of 95% of first year hunters.  I was on something like year 5 before I bagged my first animal.  A small doe on a youth only hunt.

heres a tip.  in order to cover your scent effectively i would suggest about a pint or two of fresh wolf urine.  according to all the self proclaimed wolf experts wolves only prey on the weak and injured, therefore any large strong buck will know it has nothing to fear from you and allow you to get close if it smells you.

Shoot the first legal deer you have a clean close shot on.
Use  a range finder if you can.
Pick a spot and let er rip

What did you mean by 'sport that is dying off'?

The media touts that hunters are a minority, I was being sarcastic.

The places to hunt like the Winston unit that are popular seem to explode with lots of people.

The only reason hunters are in the minority is because we do not all hunt for our food anymore.
