Title: Oregon and Washington want to handle wolves on their own
Post by: denali on August 27, 2012, 05:15:58 PM: looks like the feds can't wait to get out of the wolf business, I did not see this coming so soon ?

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- As wolves reintroduced into the Northern Rockies push west, the states of Oregon and Washington want to manage them from here on.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has already lifted federal protection for the wolf in the eastern third of Oregon and Washington, as well as in several other states.

The agency is evaluating whether to extend that throughout the lower 48 states. A preliminary decision is due by the end of the year.

Both Oregon and Washington protect wolves under state law, have formal management plans and have told the service that federal protection is redundant.

Environmentalists disagree.

Noah Greenwald of the Center for Biological Diversity says federal protection requires a stronger regional plan for recovery, protects habitat and has stronger penalties for poaching.

Post by: sebek556 on August 27, 2012, 05:20:14 PM: think the feds are tired of paying the bill, so if it state run they step aside and the state picks up the tab... only our state was chomping at the bit to pick up the tab so they could protect them where the feds don't want to protect them anymore.

Post by: Humptulips on August 29, 2012, 07:17:14 PM: The Center for Biological Diversitys bread and butter is sueing the Feds and getting all their legal expenses reimbursed by the Federal Government.
If the Feds bow out they can't get paid for sueing the State.
Their golden goose would stop laying. No wonder they're squaking.

Post by: copasj on August 31, 2012, 10:26:32 AM: Either way I would be happy to see the Federal Government turn over the program to the states. That should have happened a long time ago. How many years ago were the original stipulations for turning it over met anyway? Does anyone remember?
