How do you archery hunters cover up your scent while hunting. It's my first year with a bow and I just realized i Havnt even thoughy about covering my sent! :bash:

Mind the wind.

Keep your hunting clothes and underwear sealed in bags with earth scent until you use them. And, like Grundy said, mind the wind. It doesn't matter if you were Scentlok, bathe in elk or deer urine, or cover yourself with a sealed, de-ionized plastic bag (don't do this; you'll die). If your wind is in their face, they're gone.

:yeah: It is the only tried and true method, you will find a lot of debat with all the different over the counter scent killers, however in the end the wind is your friend or your worst enemy. no chemical will ever keep you downwind and no matter how much scent killer you may use there will always be noise, breath and the animals fine tuned senses. Use the wind and hunt smart. With that I would reccomend keeping your gear as natural scented as possible by not washing it with fabric softener and wearing pumping gas, changing oil or eating McDonalds and such... Best of luck, archery is by far the most challenging and well worth the experience when you get in close.

It may sound a little crazy, but I gave up on scent control years ago. Even with scent lok, scent shield spray, etc. deer and elk will still smell you if they are downwind. So save your money on scent control items, and hunt with the wind in your favor. One way I've had some luck beating their nose is by hunting out of a treestand 20+ feet high. I believe this causes your scent to blow over them. Good luck archery hunting this year.

i feel that the less you smell the less you might spook them if they do catch wind of you. if you put off just a very faint scent they might think your a long ways off, and it might not alarm them as if you put off a massive odor. so keeping that in mind i wash my cloths in dead down wind, hung it off the porch and sprayed it down with dead down wind, and pack it with dead down wind powder. i wash with dead down wind soap, use dead down wind deodorant, dead down wind boot and foot powder, and when i get to the woods ill spray down again to get my hair, face, backpack, and anything else that might have a scent on it. :tup:

spend time in the woods when not hunting and note what you were doing, wearing, the wind etc when you get close to critters then apply those tactics :dunno:

I use some dead down wind stuff and some Silver XP stuff. Whatever is on sale between the two. I use for the same reason as you, They may think I'm far off when I'm close. I'll chew pine needles to cover my breath. does all this stuff work? Hell, I don't know but, it makes me feel better about my hunt and increases my confidence which many people on here always say that confidence is a big part of hunting.
Also, play the wind whenever you can.

how many animals were killed by people wearing red plaid wool, that was worn around the campfire, and people smoking and had bacon grease spilled on it...
Guys used to go days or a week even without even a good wipe down out in the mtns... They knew to keep the wind in their face...
You do not need scent killer/blocker/make you smell like daisies in a bottle....
One of the smelliest old men I ever met, was one of the best damn elk hunters I ever met.. he smelled like a combination of stale chew, stale beer, soured milk and a 2 week old road killed skunk... killed more damn elk than most of us will ever dream of..

a little cow in heat never hurts, had a bull 20yrds away directly down wind from two of us and we got him in because of that. but wind is the biggest thing, sometimes i smoke out my clothes at camp but thats just so i dont smell myself :chuckle:

Cut some branches off the trees where you will be hunting and seal them up with your stuff. :tup:

Best way is to watch the wind. I wash my clothes in silver xp or what ever else is scent free but a deer or elk has a great nose. You can fool thier eyes and ears but not thier nose. I sweat a lot during seasons and I hike all day , not possible to eliminate that. So I change clothes every couple of days so I don't offend myself and I Hunt into the wind.

We tagged two fives and a six last year. One of the group was a chainsmoker. I didnt think we would see anything, seriously two packs a day. who knows? Urge to merge is a powerful thing...

Problem is the deer come from private property down wind... I honestly don't think there is any where on that trail I could go that wouldn't put the buck down wind and dont think there's a good spot to put a tree stand. But I guess ill take my chances and cover myself with the bushes as much as I can.

hunt the edge and hope he comes through the middle, sneak in on the edge your gonna set up on as well so your not sending your scent across the area you think they are.

I think all these products are helpful but in the end make little difference. I use a few also. Cant hurt. Treestands do seem to help. My dad smells like an ashtray! He smokes alot. He hunts wind, no scent control, no camo, nothing but old orange vest and hat. He does very well. Hes bagged 6 or 7 bulls the last ten years and several deer. He stinks, doesnt hide and walks the wind very slowly. He is a rifle hunter so he doesnt need to be close but most kills have been within 150yards. He also has hawk eyes, lol. WIND...

wind wind wind , and just stay freash as you can , a lil cover sent dosn't hurt but there nose will bust you every time , there's always something that dosn't smell right . i dont use elk sent since I like to smell them .

now good base layer merino garments worn next to skin help, its natural. Better than any silver nano-whatever treated stuff.
I like Core4 base layer merino, other base or mid layers are Sitka merino and First Lite merino for camo patterns.
and clean your body regularly. I do so when in camp after the everydays hunt and always I have e-z to use scent away wipes etc in my pack while in the field, just as an additional precaution.

And dont pass up the chance to roll around abit in a fresh wallow! Best cover scent ever for elk. :tup:

i bought some dead wind and ill will be rubbing up on the trees. haha. ill be in a low spot and the wind seems dead. so thats a good start. just need to pray the buck shows up!
