me and my boy hunted some walk in only dnr and weyco land today. this unit is any deer. saw a nice doe this morning. but i screwed up and thought i took everything i need. wrong i forgot my release :chuckle:.im darn lucky i only live about 20 minutes from this unit. i had to laugh. oh well it is the first day of the season did not want to take a doe .maybe later in the season. would rather shoot a buck. we biked in all the areas we went to today saw alot of bear and coyote scat on the roads today. also a ton of elk sign. got a little hotter later in the day so we called it a day.

At least your weapon of choice was funtional. My first trip out for bear never even took my trigger lock off! Now that you have the cobwebs cleared you should be good to go. Doesn't sound like to bad of a first day.

Put a few miles on the mtn. bike today, mainly looking for elk but also have a multi-season deer tag in my pocket. Unlike last week when I saw alot of elk, I didn't see any today. Didn't see any deer until 7:30pm when I saw the biggest blacktail buck I've ever seen, 4x4 w/eyeguards, taller & wider then his ears and in velvet. Spotted him coming into a clearing to feed @ 250yds, closed to within 80yds with fading light then he busted me, Didn't know whether to :puke: or :cryriver:
Also saw alot of bear crap in the road, more then I remember seeing in years past.

Great day 22 miles on the mt. bike 5miles on the boots! We saw 4 bucks 3 of which were 2 pts. one of those was a big forky and a nice 3 pt. We couldn't close the gap. My little cousin let his first arrow go at a big doe but he shot to high. Clean miss!

worked a 16 hour shift.....

Camping over here in E-Wa.Missed a nice 4x4 mulie this morning. He had 2 2pts with him, as i was putting on a stalk 1 of the 2pts senced that that camo'd blob shouldnt be there, had a 30min stare down with him.As he walked off i shot at the 4pt for what i thought was 50 and watch as the arrow just pass over his back.

We sat in a blind Saturday morning until about 7:30 waiting for a 4 point that never showed. Headed out to another spot & saw 4 deer up on a small ridge. I let the new son-in-law (recently converted from rifle to bow) put the stalk on for about 20 min. He let one loose at 40 yrds and shot low on a spike. We head to my honey hole from there & see a nice 4 pt with 3 Does & 3 Fawns. Now I'm not one to break up a productive family so we drool as we pass them up. Next we see 17 more Does within 15 min so I tell the boy to get ready. There's an old apple orchard and he will have plenty of time to select a good shooter. As we round the corner there's 5 Does grazing and 2 more on their hind legs eating apples. They barely look at us & go back to eating. The first shot drops her within 12 yards. Severed an artery & a lung, she was dead in 5 minutes. One Doe goes to check out whats up & the next arrow breaks a rib and deflects down. Got one lung and she went about 20 yrds and layed down. Filled both our tags by 8:30 am opening day. Now I can help my son hunt the high buck in 2 weeks. I need a bigger freezer. lol

Way to go Stick em does eat good glad to hear of someone having some success.

It was a great opening day for us. I took my handicapped buddy out and he was able to bag a doe. He was so excited. His second deer in two years.

Good news, some folks are giving reports. Makes me anxious to get out there. :chuckle:

dad gum throttle. i have ridden 16 miles on mt bike in a day and it took me all day. and that was just riding and pushing my bike. so if you rode 22 miles and hiked 5. please tell me at what point you hunted. seriously

went out again yesterday hunted the winston unit for a while rode in about 2 miles on are mtn bikes on a closed gate off the 508. got to hot did not see anything. so we left got some grub and headed back to another area that was weyco and dnr. we went out about 1700 and i stayed to about 2000 and left. cruising down one of the roads it was 1830 and i figured the deer would start moveing around about this time. i was right look over in a clearcut at 25 yards i see a doe standing there stareing at us. get the bow my son says he sees another deer behind one of the trees. some numbnut comes flying down the road by the clearing and hits his brakes when he sees me in the clearcut putting the stalk on. this road is not gated it is a mainline road that goes into dnr land. so the deer and his buddy boogie out of there did not even make it a 1/4 mile down the road and theres two more standing on the edge of the clearcut getting to late and looseing light so i called it a day. seen 5 deer in two days in the same area. there are only a few locked gates in this area. the heat is makeing the deer move around early in the morning or about 1800 to 2000 at night good luck to everyone. hopefully will see a buck soon. this unit is any deer but dont really like shooting does but may have to take one soon if i dont see any bucks. got to be a buck in there some where with so many does running around.

Hunted lots I rode/pushed in 6.5 miles for a morning hunt. I was able to get back to my truck in 45 min due to the fact that going down is awsome. Then went to a different gate and rode/pushed in almost 5 miles for the end of the day hunt. Coasted out of there after dark.
Went in 4 miles this morning saw 4 deer but none had bones. Had a nice doe at 35 yards quarting away but decided she could finish her day with what ever she had planned!

oh ok......that makes sense now. its the in then out where you got the miles. i did a 16 mile round trip once. it literally took me all day. i was just scouting.
sorry bout that throttle. that is totally doable.

6 days in Alpine Lakes, came out with a goose egg. 1 stalk on a 2x3, didn't pan out. Only 1 more weekend for me before my 'early season archery' is 350 days away...
