Title: The 'Hunt' will continue next week!
Post by: iRem on September 08, 2012, 08:03:54 PM
Well, I has out on Friday for a 1 day hunt as I was wanting to get in another "Scouting" day with bow and tag in hand! Went to my first location in the Taneum area and hiked about 5 miles with no sign. Sat and did some early morning cow calling and called in the stinkiest, rutty smelling archery hunter I have ever been around! WOW! I am soooo glad that I got away from using Elk Piss while hunting as I like to use the sense of smell to help with locating elk while I'm on the move! My best example is the second location I went to in the Manastash area. We spotted this bull with some cows and I proceeded to follow them. As I got onto the trailthis these elk the bull smelled rutty! Looks like and smells like he just got out of a wallow and smells like the guy from this morning!
I hope the weather gets a little cooler next week, the moon will be in our favor and hope I'll be able to get it done starting Thursday for the last 4 days of the early season.
Any one have any luck in the Manastash area?

Here's the pic my buddy took while we were hunting! A little fussy but thats what we get when a big bull (no bull tag) is starring at you and your trying not to spook the cows too bad....

I was out with a buddy helping him today and got skunked in the Manastash. Some good sign, but no luck. Tons of hunters though.

Just got back from Manastash. Tons of hunters. We were in the elk most every day, but couldn't seal the deal. My uncle and I both had shot opportunities at cows, but limbs in front of the vitals at 26 yds for me and cows stacked together for my uncle left us with un-notched tags. Went out for a morning hunt today and the bulls were bugling quite a bit. Second week should be better. Seemed like guys just couldn't keep off of the cow calls. Sounded like a bunch of squirrels at times.

Yeah I figured there would be a few extra hunters on the weekend. Not looking forward to have to hunt the last 4 days into the weekend but I'll have to use it to my advantage. I also thought I would just hit the drainages and make it happen. The bull that we found with the cows came up out of a drainage. Seemed to me that there's a wallow at the bottom, so might start my hunt down in there!
