So im on my 6th year of archery elk hunting and it feels like its all coming together...im getting in elk everyday now..ive had 5 different bulls bugling since saturday....i spent all summer scouting these herds...its the only green dot road close to my house and money is tight so im hunting close to home this year...well i get out this morning at 3:30 am like everyday this week and locate a bull right away...we spent 4 hrs looking for him after light but he gave is the slip...he went quiet...well we decided to call it a day and we get to the highway and the gate is closed :bash:...i figured some yahoo just closed the gate to be funny...not the case...it wasnt locked but they put up a red dot after we were in there already :bash: all that time wasted scouting and going after these elk for this to happen...first my dloop broke as im drawing on a 5pt and now this....whats gonna happen next :bash: :bash: :bash: sorry i just needed to vent
-
Just curious, is it still open to entry by foot?
-
Yeah it is and were probably gonna just bike into the first herd....the 5pt iis to far
-
I don't understand how hunters can be frustrated with wey.co. It is THEIR land and it is a privilege they let us on THEIR land. We as hunters know that THEIR land can be closed to entry at their discretion at any time. It is part of the game and you should have a plan B just in case.
-
Im not mad that they closed it i understand why....thats just how my seasons been goin
-
Dont know where you are hunting but the St.Helens tree farm is now closed to all public access. Just called the hotline.
-
wow.. why jump his crap about venting his frustration? it woud be frustrating to spend lots of time to have that happen. It is a privialage and not a right that is true but it is frustrating to have thangs you can't control happen that impact your hunt or job or whatever. Sorry about your frustration..good luck on yur hunt!

Most likely west of I-5, he said it was a green dot road that changed to red. The st.helens tree farm doesn't work on the dot system.

sorry, wasn't really trying to give him crap and that might have sounded harsh. :sry: I have been in this situation many times over. However, I hear this type of thread every year.
I hunt Wey.co as well, I have for many years. Been there, done that and learned to have a back up plan. When you play their game you have to follow their rules and know that it is a 50/50 chance they will close the farm during early bow. It is no secret and that is the chance you take if you invest time in this type of hunt. All I am saying is, you should expect it and be ready to put plan B into action.

Im just outside of aberdeen...they red dotted all their land today...walk in access only.....all the area around here is private timber co.....i think the closest state land that i can think of is out past menlo and i cant afflord to drive that far everyday or i would....so biking in it is
-
I quit hunting Weyco land due to their stupidity and changing rules on a daily basis during hunting seasons.... :bash: :bash:
-
Weyco shut their land down yesterday to public entry yesterday, cant even walk in :bash: Just when I had the elk located. :bash: We got "escorted" off. Im frustrated right now sitting at home on vacation wondering where Im gonna hunt for the rest of the season
-
Really can't blame them, it's been pretty dry.
-
I can understand driving, but walking or biking in come on. And Im sure their employees will still be able to drive in to hunt...
-
Weyco. used to shut down alot quicker when they allowed vehicles. Now they seem to wait (maybe because hundreds of angry hunters roaming when its dry isn't great either). But what burns me is all the public land they control access to that also gets shut down. Landlocked state and Forest Service. These agencies need to get real easements to
their OUR land. Just in the St. Helens tree farm I can think of 50,000 acres of PUBLIC land the Weyco. controls access to.
35,000 acres DNR Toutle block
7,000 acres St. Helens Wildlife area (lucky to get a mudflow tag-hope you can get there)
Most of the west border side of Forest Service land including several trailheads.
Why are we paying for the WDFW to set up year-by-year "cooperative" access agreements, when we really need easements that last forever.
-
Im walking into my huntin spot now and got passed by a service truck and 2 log trucks...guess they cant cause sparks or the machines there going to run :bash:

:yeah:

Weyco is great to early season hunters, if you work for them. :twocents:
-
Will employees still get to drive in and hunt in the Pe Ell tree farm?
Does anyone know?
-
More than likely. I know several loggers for Weyco who have gotten their bucks or bulls during a fire closure. They were in there to "service" or "move" equipment and just happen to have a bow with them. I guess there are perks to some jobs, eh?

i catch a lot of crap from the eastsiders when i bitch about timber company land access issues. none of them have obviously lived in grays harbor! millions of acres out here, the majority of it is locked up, and that also blocks off access to tons of state and county land that's behind it. at least with normal property owners, you can go knock on doors. not so with the corporate land barons...

The DNR has a system called "industrial fire precaution level" that loggers follow. it ranges from 1 (no restriction) to 4 total shutdown/no logging. But the companies do not tie their "fire closures" for the public to this system. That's why for hunters it can be closed, while chain saws and log trucks still work. Getting companies to tie their total public closures to the DNR system (level 4) would be a good start, and it would be consistent, and justified.
