Opening morning.... First day light..... Two bulls bugling! I got up the steep hillside into the large timber. The wind is good and I gotta be close, so I bugled. A quick response came about 150 yards out. I set up and began some come love me talk. I could hear brush breaking, but it was staying distant. I decided to move in. As I stalked through the timber I started to reach the top of a small ridge. Knowing the noise had to be 70-80yds beyond me, I slowly crept up to have a peek. I was startled by large bull no more than 30 yards above me.... He spooked and ran straight down the hill crossing in front of me. :bash: :bash: :bash: I blew it! But before my emotions got the best of me I heard that familiar noise (crunch, crunch). I looked up and there was the other bull, not seeming alarmed at all. I ranged him at 97yds, he was just pacing back forth. I tucked next to a tree and gave some more come love me talk. He began pacing in a 10yd circle and wouldn't come in. Then I watched him turn and take a few steps to head over the small ridge he was on. At the top he stop and let out a short bugle. I answered him with the same, he quickly turned and headed straight for me at a quick walk. As he approached 40yds I realized I had no shot due to trees. I looked on to his future destination and saw he was going come into a shooting lane at 20yds on the trail he was walking. What could go wrong, good wind blowing up the hill, a bull in front of me headed into an opening, can't get better than that. Right? He only made it about 5yds closer when a heard of cows came in from above. They winded me and took off in a hurry, the bull spun and headed with them. I frantically cow called, the bull and two cows stopped on the ridge I originally called the bull from. Now, roughly 100yds away I did what any hunter would do.... I stood up and walked toward him. They stood there... I approached what I believed was 60yds and let one fly. I could see my arrow the whole way, it was perfect.... If was facing the other way. I hit him in front of the hips, but hitting the liver seems to be pretty destructive.
