Title: High hunt muzzy buck
Post by: teanawayslayer on September 18, 2012, 09:24:34 AM
we headed up into the gpw on friday.  The smoke was so heavy you couldn't even see the mountains we we were hiking into because of all the smoke.  The hike was long and grueling.  It took around 5 hours to get into base camp.  It seemed to be around 80 degree's, way to hot.  Opening morning rolled around and we decided to sit in camp and glass all the area and spot the buck we wanted to go after.  We saw tons of deer and a really good buck that we wanted to go after.  We watched him bed down and started to get ready to head out.  I look up around a 1000 yards away in the other direction and see this big buck standing on the hillside. I turned my spotter to look at him and saw he was a masher saw a good five points on one side.  My partner and I head out after him.  We get in the general area of the buck after a little rock climbing.  Looking around in this little pocket, I see movement in a little patch of trees.  He stands up I take aim squeeze the trigger and "click" :bash: I tell my partner to shoot and he said your in the way.  That old buck gave us the slip. Never seen anything like it disappeared like a ghost.  I was so pissed. My double safety on the back of my bolt on my disc tightened it self up and did allow me to shoot.  :bash: My only complaint about that gun.  The rest of the day was kind of a bust.  We all got back to camp and came up with a plan for sunday morning.  Another person in camp saw a big 30" earlier in the day so we decided to do a push on sunday to get that buck.  well we did the push with 6 of us and nothing but a few doe's. My partner asked me what I had in mind for the rest of the day. I told him I was going to try to get into that upper pocket where we saw the five point from the day before.  I took the long hike over there. It took a while to find a spot to climb up the rocks to get into the upper pocket.  I found a spot that wasn't to difficult to climb into and got up into the pocket.  Man it was sweet.  I was sitting on top having a snack and getting a drink and look down the hill a bit and see a deer's arse in the brush about 50 yards away.  I get up the bino's  and he turned a bit and saw he had horns.  He then disappeared  just like the buck the day before.  I headed down the rocky ridge around 400 yards and spot this buck eating in a patch of trees.  In the same spot the five point from the day before.  At this point I was wishing that I had my 7mm because I needed to make up 200 yards in order to make the shot.  So I put the sneak on. Get within 125 yards. Look into the trees where I last saw him.  He was bedded down.  I pull up the disc extreme and the buck stood up a few seconds later and I put the smack down on him.  It took me a long time to get over to the buck due to the 14 foot tall buck brush. I get over to him and he is piled up. :IBCOOL:  I tied his horns to a fir up the hill and then the work began.  Let me tell you it is not fun to quarter a deer on a steep slope.  It took me a few hours to get it done.  By this time it is 6:00.  My frame pack is in camp, and all I have is my day pack. I stuffed 3 quarters, backstraps and tenderloins in the pack, tied one quarter on the outside along with the head. I went to pick up the pack and all I could hear is the stitching ripping. :bash:  I was hurting pretty bad. Made it down the hill a 100 yards or so and ended up putting the meat out on some rocks for the night. We picked them up on the way out yesterday morning.  I would have to say this will be one of my most memorable hunts. Thank you Randy, Don, and Ed for helping me packing him out!!!  This was the second time on the high hunt and can't wait for next year.!

It was a bass pro shop red head pack. can't remember the name of it.  I bought it several years ago.  It made it through and was very surprised.

I think that pack earned it's retirement. Time for a new one.

easy one's are always nice for sure.  Nothing like hunting the bucks in the high country on there summer range.

yep the disc is a bad arse rifle.  Would recommend them to any one.  But there seemed to be way to many muzzy hunters this year.  Muzzle loading sucks!! Don't know why any one would want to hunt with a primitive weapon. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
