So... at the moment im running up and down the hills on west of yakima right now and i do not see a single soul around. Anyone have a suggestions on some other places around here? If i dont get anything today ill probably go around some more tomorrow somewhere else. I live around tacoma by the way so if there are any spots closer to the west side that would be great!
-
How did you get up in that area. Most of it is on fire and closed. Therefore that is why you aren't seeing anyone. Questions for you would be what are you hunting for?

I would guess deer since it is in the Deer section. :chuckle:
Yeah where are you at around Yakima? As Russ said most of it is closed.
-
I would suggest hunting deer in any other part of the state... Yakima area is the worst deer hunting in the state, don't know why anyone would be that far from home to hunt here? also, what parts of yakima are closed I have not heard this?

I would go to this link http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,104809.0.html (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,104809.0.html) this would give you all the information you need on closures and links to where the fires are. If you planning on hunting up there is good information to look at for closures.
-
I also had not heard of closures in Rimrock or Cowiche.
That area is probably a good place to hunt deer, if you like nice scenery with few hunters. As others have said, it's about the worst place in the state if you are looking for deer.

There is a fire up around Rim Rock.

It is part of the Yakima Complex http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3256/ (http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3256/)

I know where the fires in bethel and goose prairie are, so you were talking about the american ridge and possibly road 1500 (don't know if it's closed or not)?
I'm not trying to be a dick I just honestly don't see what you are referring too and looking through the pages on the other thread which I have been, I don't see where any general closures are, like areas above ellensburg.
-
Well, i never shot a deer before, just for some info, so exactly where around western washington is good for hunting? Because i have no clue. Also i dont know any land owners around to go hunt on so i need to be able to gain public access
-
Just tagging cause now I'd like to see where this goes....
-
A really good place to start is in the regs at harvest reports from previous seasons. Then look and make sure it's open to general hunting(not special permit). Once you've established an accessible area google earth will give some help. From there it's all about wearin out tires and boots. A lot of glassing and walking. You're not in a horrible area, just need to try looking in different spot with some purpose. Just walking around isn't going to yield a hole lot of deer.
Good luck.

Are you hunting or scouting right now?
-
what weapon and what units have you been looking in? are you scouting or hunting? are you by yourself or with someone? and what kind of terrain do you want?
-
Where can i find these reports?
-
I have some concerns about this whole thread. Yesterday you posted this up.
Hi there folks. i just bought me a 30-06 and a valid license and im ready to go shoot me a deer! except... where can i go to hunt? everywhere around here is either private property or closed to the public, when i went down to south east of seattle area (south east of enumclaw). im super excited to go but i have no clue where i need to go to find a deer. plz help!
Then you posted this: :dunno:
Hi yall. im planning to go to yakima and hunt west side of the town (because i see it that its GMU deer hunting area). now when i get there, will i encounter and gates or anything like that or is it legally accessible? i never been on a deer hunt before so i dont wnat to run into anything when i get there
Now today it sounds like you are hunting walking up and down hills and if you don't get anything today you will go some place else tommorrow. :bdid:

I hope you know Koreanese that the ONLY Modern Firearm season that is open is High Hunt Areas. There is no other units open currently for rifles. That would explain why no one else is around. I am assuming that you are rifle hunting since you posted that you have a 30-06. The season for general deer opens on the 13th of October.
I hope you are just bad with words and you are currently scouting for deer.
-
High hunt areaS?
-
High Buck Hunt Areas: Alpine Lakes, Glacier Peak, Pasayten, Olympic Peninsula, and Herny Jackson Wilderness Areas and Lake Chelan Recreation Areas.
-
wow I didn't notice any of that, good catch firefighter... hope he hasn't been modern hunting.
have you looked over the regs koreanese?
-
it takes a lot of scouting to get a deer over here. if you have trail cams, drop them off on a heavily used trail. search this site for other good info.
you never exactly told us the area you checked out. west of Yakima gives us no clue on which unit you want to hunt or were exploring. there are a lot of legal bucks over here. it just takes time to get to know the area. do you want to hunt in the sticks or in the sage brush?
I will give you areas to check out but will not give any info on my honey holes.
The Wild Rose fire is burning some of the best places i've ever hunted deer........but that was 28yrs ago. :'(
-
Ah i just re read, the regs, i see it now. I think ibetter get a guide since this is my first time.

Just trying to keep you out of trouble. Welcome to the site!

So, you seriously were deer hunting today with a modern firearm tag?
I don't get it. What made you think the season was open?
If you were confused, a quick post on here asking WHEN can I hunt, instead of WHERE, would have got you all the info you needed.
So now you have burned many gallons of gas, all to go hunting in an area that is almost the worst place to hunt deer in the state, and it's not even open.
-
Sorry, im very new at this. Its been my dream for years to shoot a deer so i got very eager to go. Hence i kinda missed the high hunt part. Thanks everyone for helping out, just one last question. So right now i can go hunt in area621 olympic penn? With a rifle that is. I bought the license and deer tag
-
Did you take a hunter's education class in this state?
If not, you may want to check into it, even if you aren't legally required to take it in order to purchase a hunting license.
-
Yes i took the course

Kind of. Only within the wilderness areas.
-

OK, well normally they go over the hunting regulations.
You cannot hunt deer with a modern firearm tag right now. Except in some wilderness areas. And for that, it really takes months of preparation.
You need to wait until Oct 13th. That is when you can start hunting.
-
Guess ill go check it out tomorrow. Im so excited right now that i cant wait till next month lol

"ah, i just read the regs"
All of them? That was fast. Ive been hunting for years and stiil dont know them by heart. Strange thread indeed.
-
Please let me know where you plan on hunting.....I would like to stay as far away as possible!!! Matter of fact, I will stay completely out of the same GMU you are hunting!! So ya, please let me know.......Thanks

Thanks alot for the smartass comments, im just a workin guy who finally have time to do what i always wanted to do. I learned my lesson and thats that. I might be retarded when it comes to regulations but i know better when it comes to handling firearms and safety. But for all others, thanks for all the help
-
You might need a NW forest pass or pay the daily $5 at certain trailheads for the wildernesses of 621.

Thanks for the info! Will check it out

Take offense with this or dont.....
In this state the regulations can be much more daunting than finding critters. To me it doesnt sound like you are in any way prepared to hunt this season. Sorry to be a downer, not being a smartass, just saying what everybody is thinking.
-
Am I the only one reading this feeling like someone is pulling my leg :dunno:
-
Nope

Well i gotta start somewhere.... and this is only chance i got for some time. Thats why i came on this site for help from experienced hunters
-
I understand the time issue.......its just a little late to simply buy a tag and go "get me a deer". You are going to have a rough start by hunting out of season with a rifle because you are "retarded" about the regs.
-
West of Yakima,
Well I hunt in Little naches and Umtanum. Yes the deer population went to chit years back. BUT, the bucks that are there are usually good ones. They do not stand on the side of the road!!! Get off the roads and hike, if you hear traffic go deeper into the hills.. I ve killed alot of deer up there over 27 years, SOme big some small. I dont trophy hunt, I see legal deer I shoot it....
Now I helped you out a little, tell us about your hunting stuff?
30-06 ok, what kind? what bullets are you planning on using? pump, bolt, semi? everr shot any game animals? elk, deer, coyote, wolf, moose... Every do any bird hunting??? Does anyone in your family hunt? how old are ya?

By the way, im not putting words in your mouth. You saud in your first post "if i dont get anything today." That means you are actively hunting.
-
Yes ill go to a leagl hunting area to hunt, i obviously didnt know about the high hunt area so ill re read the reg book more carefully and go from there
-
Well, good luck this season, be safe, shoot straight.
-
Just word to the wise also your going out there when the most hunters are going to be in the woods. I couldn't give you any info because I am just starting out around here too. My suggestion is to pick an area and scout. You have some time. If you going to go with a guide that is cool but hope your willing to spend some money. It isn't cheap to hire a guide. Best of luck to you.
