I'm just curious as to why people hunt elk on the eastside? I understand if you live over there or have massive points built up but what about the people who don't have points or dont even put in? I guess I'm wondering why someone wants to wait 8, 10, 12, 15+ years for a crack at a big bull? Not trying to start anything I'm just curious.
Opinions?

You cant see them over there! Atleast I can't see them over here because there is none, rather than feel like I'm fishing! or is it drowning :dunno: You can have that $hit hole on the west side :sry:

My reason is it has taken years to figure out where the elk run to when pushed in the area I hunt. Well 3 years ago I found the spot. I hunted the west side and killed a nice bull, but you can have that rainy, brush walkin hunting. Plus i seen 5 times as many hunters over there. I dont mind chasing spikes. Now i am building my points up for the Peaches Tag, and when i draw the whole world will know it.... :chuckle: :chuckle:
Not to mention the *censored* that drove up one morning on the wetside and fired off 3 300 RUMS and drove off. THis was above my folks place, I hunted him for the whole season once my bull was down.... LONG STORY!!!

I would never hunt elk on the Eastside. Ever.
Its lame and there arent many animals.

You haven't been to the east side before have you?
-
I hunt the eastside because that is where my dad took me to hunt elk 25yrs ago . My family and I have always hunted over there. It doesn't take very long to get there.I also like to hunt in wilderness areas.
-
A 2 hour drive is more preferred over hunting in the thick, overgrown, rainy westside. I'm also in that group whose father took them hunting on the eastside decades ago, and I have grown to know and enjoy the country. Good luck eastsiders and westsiders!

guys, guys... the eastside is horrible :chuckle: :chuckle: there are no elk in the east side at all :chuckle: just lots of hunters :chuckle: hunting the eastside is a :bdid: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
No Elk on the East side!!! Why you think in the NE corner all elk are over the counter, bull or cow, big or small. It's because there none!
-
I guess my sarcasm font is not working today :dunno:

The territory reminds me of Colorado. I love the mix of rock and trees. The ups and downs of the hunt. Now, I don't like the party hunting, the pumpkin patch (yes, I'm modern), or the spike only unless drawn. My love for the hunt, the open land, and my desire to get into a thicket drives me. I'm also instilling in my son the tenaciousness of hunting where God alone knows where the majestic animals roam, eat, grow and prosper. We learn and we grow each time. It is worth every step of every mile I walk and every word shared with him. Based on our history of hunting, every hunt is special whether an animal is won or lost.
We, my son and I, plan to switch to archery next year and that may open up a desire to try other lands, but even now as I write this I expect to stay dry versus wet.

Yes you tell them 400!

I am not a trophy hunter for elk! Any elk will do for me. I have spent so many days not seeing elk and hunting hard to only get a couple. I will be darned if I will pass a legal elk here! That being said I think I might switch to west side next year. The fire messed with me a lot this year. I am happy hunting those rag horns on the rainy side :chuckle:
-
I have been reading this thread and had to put in my :twocents:. I get the staying dry and stuff over there but hell you all got to deal with fires all the time. Granted this has been a bad year but the last couple years I have been here the eastside is pretty damn dry during the beginning of the season. I hunt muzzy for elk. Until I get my area that I want to hunt nailed down I will be on the wetside as you all call it. Just got to have good rain gear.
-
Try hunting true spike for a year if you are looking for one of the most challenging hunts in this state for otc. Lots of elk and maybe 1 in 70 is a true spike.
-
For all you guys who say its beautiful over there I'd have to agree! One of my favorite things to do is chase mulies over there. But I must say I might go crazy if I had a big bull standing in range during season and couldn't shoot him. I'm not a trophy hunter by any means and would shoot a cow 1st day of the season if I could but I do love the racks! 1...2...3... Shoot!

We I grew up hunting blacktails back when we had new clear cuts every year and no locked gates. But we always went east for elk,Nile,Bumping,Bethel Ridge.
I like it because there are vast amounts of public land not locked up. No discover pass or timber company permit. 5years ago I switched to muzzy for elk and I have never looked back. Back than it was two of us. This year it will be 8. We dont pull travel trailers or ride atvs. We drive into our area set up tents and hunt out of camp.
I also stopped burning a lot of boot leather. I find a spot with trails intersecting and I put up a ground blind and I sit. In three years of doing that I have killed two elk a spike and a cow and I missed a cow. More elk than I ever killed rifle hunting and more than I ever saw on the west side.
I like the dry crisp weather.
Every hunter has their element. It may be high hunts or low hunts, west hunts or east, tree stand or ground blind. Hiking or sitting.
When you find it you will be at ease there. It takes great resolve to sit in one place and stick it out confident that the animal will come and you will get that one chance. It is a test. Sometimes we are ready for it sometimes not.

In my opinion we need to split the state so we dont have to pay for all the westsiders roads with high gas prices/taxes. I wouldnt mind the eastside making a state with Idaho's panhandle :stirthepot: Stir the pot.....yes. Although I meant what I said :chuckle:
-
I think that some guys who never get a chance at a elk do it to their selves they work against their selves. Rushing around, racing to the top, got to be at this special place first. I gave that up , if someone is there first I move away. Hunting has become too conpetivtive , even if you are hunting alone some guys compete against themselves.
As soon as you decide that it doesn't mater if you get a elk as soon as you just relax and enjoy the quiet time. The elk will be there and if they aren't than that's OK too.
I have a old guy in my camp. He is good natured every day. Gets up late cook breakfast for anyone still in camp. Sanders out 100 yard off the road to hunt mule deer. Come back at 11 am and bakes pies, maybe will go out in the evening to hunt. 12 guys in deer camp he killed a 3 pt or bigger every year for 3 years ,and a doe on the of fyears with a doe tag. he would be on his spot at 8 am and have a buck by 10 am. But if it didnt happen he could care less. He said to be once, "You want one too bad" And the deer sense it.
Maybe they do.

Not understanding the post... we have to choose tags here.. I live in spokane and put in for Blues tags I dont draw oh well I hunt NE WA and never would I be forced to hunt spike only areas..not hunting in my eyes.

the eastside making a state
NO, you guys can't leave....then I fall into the most backwoods-hillbilly-redneck in WA. With eastsiders in the state, that's a title I'm likely to never hold. :chuckle:

I live wetside and hunt muzzy elk east and modern deer and elk west. As long as i can dry out i dont care about rain. I really enjoy hunting in thick tall timber. Wash is awesome in its variety of landscape.

How is it not hunting, not understanding that post :dunno:

I gotta agree.... Spike and cow huntng (In my eyes as well) Is not where it's at for me either. I'd rather be challenging the big bulls!!

NOT hunting to me...never wll I do it... When i go out to chase elk in Sept with my bow its not going to be limited to a spike hunt.. no way in hell, not even the point of why I am out. Ill hunt a area void of elk over a spike hunt with thousands of elk and if thats not a option Ill chase a different specie or hunt another state

:yeah: I couldnt imagine either

I'm probably in the minority but I'm an eastsider that drives west to chase elk. Well, most of the time.
Reasons:
1. I hate the desert, scab lands, and general dry conditions. I'll take constant rain over sand any day.
2. Spikes don't excite me. I'd rather chase cows before searching for the needle in a haystack spike.
3. I can avoid all of the westsiders because they all went east.
4. I prefer locked gates and timber land over 4wd and quad trails.
5. More options for muzzle loaders.
6. It's possible (though not likely for me) to harvest a branched antlered bull every year without putting in for a drawing.
7. Hunting is supposed to be an adventure. It wouldn't be much fun if I stayed close to home.
-
:yeah:
-
all the nice little wolfs the wdfw planted for are killing our elk on the eastside so if you plan on trying to hunt over here dont! just a bad decision :bash:
-
I hunted the eastside archery this year after years of westside, because of only one thing, I am sick of weyerhauser fire closures after I plan all season, scout, spend time and $$$ and then cant hunt it.
I'm cool with walk in gates but hate "no public access" signs.
We had a great early archery hunt, killed nothing but grouse but it was damm nice to just walk out of camp and hunt.
-
I also like to hunt the west so there is a chance I can get a big bull. That being said I never put in for tags just ghost points. Until this year got my muzzy bules tag. Then I will go right back to the west And try to kill some more branch bulls.
-
East side. Because it's close!
-
I wouldn't waste any money or more importantly any time hunting spikes or true spikes or whatever the hell there called.
-
I grew up hunting the eastside its all i know.
-
I'll buy a westside tag as soon as you let me hunt with you nubbs.
-
I love the land here, I have always associated here with elk, and if zI buy an elk tag again in the future I assume its gonna be for this side its where I intend to live and its where many of the people I hunt with are :dunno:

i hunt the wet side, simply because of the bulls you can shoot at everysingle year, not that i've had alot of luck, but...i did get a multiseason tag for elk a couple years ago and it answered a question of mine: where do you go when your too old or almost too old to hunt for elk, yep...the east side. seemed every camp was loaded with seniors, with a token young gun or two, to cut wood and lift the heavy stuff lol. getting an elk didnt seem to be a priority with the gangs i kept coming accross, lol. i'm not necessarily knocking it, heck, i figure just ten years, i'll be on the east side too.
