Title: Northeast Intermediate Bear Hunting

Experts,
I haven't been able to take much leave and scout the Northeastern areas I hunt.  I'll be in GMU 101 between Sherman Pass and Sherman Creek Wildlife Area from 29 September and 8 October.

Is that too late to be hunting for berries?  If not, on what elevation should I be focusing?

I've killed a bear and believe myself to have reasonable understanding of them but not specifics on what makes them tick this time of year.

Add-On:  I'm hunting the muzzleloader deer season (not great) and I'm considering bringing the .25-06 in case the need for a 175+ yard bear shot becomes necessary.  Is that foolish?  If so, for what reason.
