I got a new Moultrie D55, which is a white flash camera, kind of hard to find anymore. Everyone seems to want the infrared. After trying both types of cameras I decided I prefer the white flash. I like the color pictures at night, and you don't get all the motion blur like with the IR cams.
I put it out about a week ago looking over a big pile of apples. Got 360 pictures of 2, or possibly 3 deer, one of which is a little buck.
Anyone looking for a white flash camera might want to check into the Moultrie D55. Amazon has them for $59.86, free shipping. They are best used with bait, as the trigger speed is not the fastest around.

Just picked one of those up myself and am heading up this weekend to snag it after its initial 2 week soak.
Did yours give you problems with the red aiming light? Mine didn't work worth a damn.
All in all though, good price and like you said - free shipping.

The laser sure didn't seem to work as well as it does on my D40's. It seems to spread out and doesn't have much range. But I didn't really spend a lot of time trying it. I'll try to pay more attention to it next time.

I'm with you bobcat. I like white flash at night. I have the d-55ir and I like everything about that cam except for the ir part.
-
We have been suing one for a few years as well. They are a great cam for the money.
-
I should also add that battery life seems to be good. It's still showing 90% on the batteries after taking almost 400 pictures, most of which were at night with the flash.
Just a few more...
-
Our's eats a lot of batteries!!! But most of the time it's nov when then are up and cold as heck. Plus taking around 1500 pics every 3-4 days :chuckle:

That's what mine did. Put my hand in front of the laser just a foot or so away from the camera and it was really dim and about the size of my hand. I'll fiddle with it next time too.
Your pics are nice and clear, can't wait to see what I have on mine!

Well I know it's not going to be as easy on batteries as the IR cams I have, but I can already tell that it's much better than my D40's. I usually get 6 weeks with the 6 "D" batteries in the D40's. With this D55 I bet I will get at least 12 weeks out of the 6 "C" batteries. And I'm fine with that.
Cold weather will almost for sure change that though. If I use my Moultries in the winter I will only use them with rechargeable external batteries.

That is what I have been thinking of doing as well. I am going to buy a new batch of cams this year. I might do another batch of d55's with battery packs.

If you can get to them with a vehicle, or close, try using a car battery. Or a tractor battery. As long as it's 12 volts, it will run them.
-
Yeah I wondered about that, I just did not want to cook the cams and I am not a electrical type of guy :chuckle:
-
Nice! Thanks for the post Bobcat, I like the sounds of that cam. I'll pick a couple of those up next time. Do they have the option for the 3 shot burst?
Thanks again, looks like the BT rut has started early!! :chuckle: Love the rut posts.
-
Yes, I have it doing 3 shot bursts. Pretty good camera for the money, IMO.
-
Looks like it takes better pictures than the $50 Tasco from Walmart:

Well, now I got some elk on the camera at the same location, so thought I'd just add them to this thread:
-
Nice

Finally pulled the card from my new D55, almost 500 pics in 2 weeks. Most all were of the same small spike and doe and I'm pretty sure they haven't moved more than 8 feet in the past 2 weeks :chuckle:
Snapped a couple of this youngster. Nothing huge showing up yet.
All in all I'm pleased with the quality of the pics for the price I paid
-
Great pics bobcat! Thats a really nice bul, that cams in there tight gettin some good up close pics of those elk. Really cool, thanks for posting.
I need to get my cams back out there Saturday!

I'm pretty new, but I think you have 2 little bucks there....? Correct me if I'm an idiot (likely), but in the first set of pics it looks like there are 2 different bucks, one is the clean 2X2 and the other has a small 3rd point (spine, spike, branch, eyeguard, shovel, horn, bone.... did I get them all?) on his right side.
-
Awesome bull! Weak 2nd points but still a dandy. Nice!
-
Doesn't look like the White Flash spooks the deer or elk at all, but do predators notice it? Just curious. I need to get a new cam since my Bushnell Trophy broke and I like the pictures and price of the camera you have. I want to put up a cam for coyotes and predators around the house that doesn't spook them.
-
I had a Moultrie D40 (white flash) out all last winter on a bait pile for predators and got lots of pictures of both coyotes and bobcats. The flash never seemed to bother them and they kept coming back for more.
-
I bought four, just what I was looking for, a sub$100 camera with a strong recommendation from a member.
-
Thanks for all the info. I'm going to order one, and hope its better quality than my $200 Bushnell. For that price I might get a couple. I have an infra red Cuddeback and it takes OK pictures, but for the price and the fact that the game don't seem to mind the flash it isn't worth it.
-
Hey bobcat great shots. WHat GMU is this if you don't mind sharing?

Southwest Washington.
Does that help? :dunno:
-
I just suggested to my wife that we get one of these for my youngest son's 6th birthday :chuckle:

Just remember, and I believe I already mentioned this, but with this camera you really need to use bait or some kind of attractant, to at least get the animals to slow down. Otherwise you may be disappointed with this camera, as you will very likely get a lot of pictures of nothing.

Yeah that's about all I was wondering. Thanks. Great shots.

I read years ago, that animals can't see a strobe-type flash. Can't recall if it was the duration, or frequency of the flash, but it doesn't register on their eyesight.
