Title: Bumping Goat backpack hunt
Post by: Idahocougar on September 25, 2012, 08:30:50 PM
I'm leaving Saturday for a backpack hunt up on Nelson Ridge. We are going to make a loop from Bismark Peak to Mt Aix and back down. I have the week off and am hoping thats enough time to get the job done. Any particular areas that I should check out up there?

Hunted Bootjack last weekend and saw a large group of nannys & kids but didn't find any billies. We also made a quick trip up Wildcat/Kitten Creek but didn't find any up there. Looks like a great area though.

Did you do any scouting this summer  :dunno:  my cousin shot a nice Billy in there in 05'  but he had 15 plus days in there scouting and hunting.

I've spent 7 days in the unit so far getting to know the area. I would have liked to do much more but with a young family and living 4 hours away its been difficult to make anyother trips over. I've scouted the Cashpraire/Burnt Mtn area, Timberwolf Mtn, Bootjack, and Wildcat. I haven't made any trips up on Nelson Ridge yet because I know the bulk of the goats accounted for in the area are up there and don't expect finding them difficult due to the open ridges they live on.

Just remember the goats in that area move day to day.  What isn't there on one day could be in a day or two.  If you take the 1600 road to the end those couple of ridges west of there usually hold goats.  Look over the areas with just nannies and kids,  because there can be a billy on the fringe of them somewhere.

As you get later into the season (and closer to the November rut) the billies will start following the groups of kids and nannies around just waiting for them to start rutting.  Last year in the Baker area we spotted a big group of nannies lsat weekend of September with no billies.  The next weekend this billy was following the herd about 300 yards behind them wherever they went.

Good luck on the hunt and be sure to keep us posted!!!

Thanks for the advice. I wont just discount those groups of nannys and kids before I give them and the surrounding area a real thorough look over. Great looking billy by the way

Some good country in there.  My timing was off to see anything last time I was on Nelson.   Goodluck on your hunt.
