Can anybody tell me how Waterfowl and Pheasant hunting on the Yakima Indian Res is It looks like a great place to hunt around the Satus Wildlife Area looking at the map I got from them.

Satus gets packed sometimes and others you have to keep your head down from the quail hunting mafia out there. On a foggy day though...well it can be awesomely mediocre. Just make sure you keep all your valuable stuff outta sight too. I hunted it for years and now the crowds have pushed me elsewhere. :twocents:

I don't remember exactly what area but I hunted upland birds on the reservation several years ago with some friends. Never again. The plots were were given had junk piles of broken glass and some areas bordered on peoples back yards. We were greeted by some of the neighbors pit bulls when we got our dogs out of the trucks. It had the potential to be a really bad experience. They'll never get another dime from me....except what Obama gives 'em.

THey kncocked them dead this fall on the early Youth opener. They released a ton of birds just prior to the opener and the kids had a TON of action. I saw alot of happy faces with birds.

sounds like you had a really bad experience. Lot of good areas and lots of birds if you steer clear of some of the "guided" areas. lot of areas to look and theres others on here that keep coming back so there must be something good about it. Not every spots or location is the same and not everybody has the same experience.

The water fowl on the satus reserve is ok. As far as upland birds, quail is all you will find. I wish is were a diff story but there are no pheasants out here any more..... The tribe tries to manage large parcels for wild life but all they have created is coyote habitat. And yes it is illegal for tribal members to shoot coyotes.

Biggest controversy I have heard is that they have a new manager down in Toppenish and he isn't familiar with when to flood and how much and its been a disaster this fall. I have no idea, just what I hear everyone complaining about down on the duck farm.

You're thinking of Sunnyside wildlife area. The Yakama Tribe doesn't release any farm raised pheasant on their property.

Pheasants. I don't know if the west end is open for pheasants (west of lateral A rd towards white swan) but there are a ton near my home. :dunno: never hunted pheasants or fowl.

Good to know goose. I just talked to about 6 boys and one girl that went down there and I got 7 stories all at once with all sorts of hand motions and details, several it was their first birds .........then the dads chimed in. I asked if it was on the rez as we have had horrible pheasants here in the upper valley and they said yes. :dunno:

As for the new manager at Toppenish, he can only flood when he has enough water. We all know how dry we've been the past few months and the fact is, the creeks are low. I tried getting him to get a headstart on mowing so that they would have water on the Topp NWR for the youth hunt but they missed it by a few days. That's ok, there was plenty of birds elsewhere in the valley.

Plenty of birds if you hit it right. Trial and error is how I made it work. Spent probably 800 dollars in gas last season learning that area

Just got back from east yesterday pretty dry they are really lacking water, and I really didn't see the birds I thought I would :dunno:
